Dan said yes on the 7900 cyl. on the 665-681.  Use the 1.5mm cyl. gasket.

The Helsel's bought some for their main falling saws for day in day out work and they couldnt survive going through cranks and bearing issues.

Others that tried them for real work saws everyday use on the job (not firewood cutting) said the upper right av was a weak point and gave them up too. They got tired of down time with solo and parts ordering.

Dan had some out had 5 come back with broke cranks (still under warranty) used by pro fallers.  Solo replaced em with 675's.  Concerns me as I have a 665 waiting for the 681 jug.  Gonna do it anyway let the chips fall where they may.

I bought mine from Dan. Prolly not used near as much as pro guys but my saw sure has done alot of noodling last few years. I like it well enough to fix it if something happened. One heck of a saw.

Dan told me the Dolmar 7900 P&C works on the 665-675-681 using the 1.5mm cyl. gasket.  I bought 2 from Baileys when they had free ship in Dec. last year.  Both have the lightweight piston (non windowed).  Hoping the lighter piston will further reduce stress on the crank.  May buy an OEM or AM windowed piston to use in the Makita 6401.  Use the OEM in the Solo.  Kyle @ E&E says they can still get the windowed piston.  Their warehouse has old stock.  I just did a BBK on my other 6401 basic WP about 8 tanks so far.  That thing is a "BEAST".   Everybody says the OEM makes more power if it does WOW.

Good luck on your quest for a good 681 crankshaft. I am not sure that they ever built a good one. I have seen 6 of the 681's that broke the crank. The first two that I had seen had port work done and ran the 272 Husky coils. I assume that the crank couldn't take the higher rpms. The next 4 that broke were on bone stock 681's.
Solo has been good about it. When I get one with a bad crank they replace the whole saw, no age limit. I have to send them the complete old saw for replacement. They will then replace the 681 with a new 675 as they have no 681's left.
If you still want the longer stroke of the 681, I would suggest sending out your Dolmar crank and have it stroked.

Here is the last 681 broken crank that I had in. The crank is also twisted and you can see the big end rod pin has moved out and it also chewed up the engine case.

Question Dan, when you say twisted, do you mean that the counter weights are now not in line because one has spun a liitle more than the other due to the big end moving? Are they all failing the same?

The answer is yes to both of your questions. Solo tells me that they have corrected the problem with crank failures. The crank that I pictured above was from a 681 replacement saw for another bad crank.

Is there a specific year model on the 681 crank failures?
