2054 bogging out
« on: June 12, 2014, 06:23:04 am »
I have a 2054 that works good in all positions except vertical. Saw works fine to lay on its side to cut trees, vertical with the bar up. But, vertical bar down is the limit for the saw in this position. just past vertical the saw suddenly bogs out. Takes a minute to come out of it's spell and then works fine. There is no time delay between the time it is vertical and begins to bog. goes in to an instant bog condition.  Saw has lots of power, good on idle and good at high rpm's. I do not like the way the air filter is attached. This can push on the carb, poor design.  Thanks in advanace for any help.

Have you checked your fuel line and filter? When you say 'bogs out' is the saw starved for fuel or flooding? If it is starving for fuel, perhaps the filter is not the correct one or it has become disconnected from the line, causing the line not to seek the lowest point in the tank when in the bar-down position. If ir is flooding the most likely it is the carb or impulse.

Checked out the 2054 this morning. Seems to be flooding out the best I can tell. If it was starving for gas I would expect it to lean out like it was running out of gas. Plug is slightly damp when I take it out after it bogged out.
My plan is to replace the fuel line, filter and this saw has some kind of check valve on the tank vent line, will replace that and the line.
I will keep you posted with results. IF you can think of anything else I would like to here from you.

   Thanks for the input

How long have you had the saw? Was it new or used, might try cleaning the carburetor and put a complete kit in it. Needle may be worn, or not set correctly.

I have not had the saw long. A guy I know gave up on it after taking it to 2 repair shops without having success. I recommended he try a new 261 ms. He will never go back to using the Jonsered now. So it is a project saw for me to figure out the problem. I to run a 261 ms and a 2165. I will donate this 2054 to my son in law  if i can get it to work properly. I think the main problem with the saw was the tank vent. Just can't understand why it works bad in one position. I take on projects like this to learn.

The 2054 is fixed,,,, I think. Where the the vent pipe comes out of gas tank into the carb box,,,,,the vent line was off the pipe. It had been shortened and the cover screw on the right side must have hit it and it came off. While I had the cover off and the hose off I turned the saw over and gas run out of the pipe. With the saw inverted the gas would run right into the breather mounted into the top of the cover.
I have put a new line on the vent pipe and the saw is working good. I will take it to the woods and put a couple of tanks through it. Then I will know for sure.

    Good talking with you.

Great that you got her running. The 2054 is a nice saw, I'm betting you will keep it after running it for a while.

It is very easy for a person who works with saws daily to take a step up in saw performance. Back in the day I owned 3 254xps and had great luck with them, all around good saw. I sold all 3 in working order a couple  years ago after I bought a 261ms. Just couldn't take them to the woods after running the 261. I expect the 2054 is about the same saw as 254. I have also switched to 18" bars on my two bigger saws. They happened to come with 18"bars and I really like them. The 2054 has a 15" bar. If anyone has never tried the 261 they will be pleasantly surprised by the balance, lightness and speed of this saw.  I have tried 026, 260, 361,362 and none of these saws impressed me. I am not a stihl man but I like the 261.

I wasn't impressed with the 362 until they were really broken in.  We run 2 of them with 25" bars and they've been super reliable.

I will give one another try, maybe, someday. The one I tried was new out of the box. Sthil had given two saws away for prizes in a rookie woodsmens competition. Teenage brothers won the 2 saws, 1st prize was 362 and 2nd was the 261. Teenage boys would rather use there dad's saws and wanted cash for the prize saws to spend on girls. I bought the 261. Good right out of the box. The 261 is by far the best saw for me and the cutting I do. My back is not as young as it use to be!!!!!!!!!!
