Jonsered 2149
« on: August 20, 2014, 08:06:00 pm »
I have a 2149 with the 49cc (i think) open port top end. I bought it at an auction but Its in good shape and I'm thinking it will be a keeper.my question is should I buy a closed port OEM 52cc 2152/late350 cylinder with a 353 piston or a 2153/346NE cylinder? There is nothing wrong with the p&c in it now. I was just wondering if there will be a huge difference. I currently have a stock oe346 and the open port 2149 is real close to it. So, what do you all think? 2152 cylinder/353 piston, 2153 p&c, or leave as is?

Are you porting whatever you get or leaving stock?   I still think a 50cc 346 top would be hard to pass up from those choices.

Curious if 346 will fit on a p5000?

In the 5000 the port lower transfers are in the cylinder wall?

The 346 they are in the base

Part of the MVP trick was to take out the cylinder wall where the transfer was and make the 5000 a open port?

Marcel took the bridge out of the transfer on the saws I've seen.  I believe the p5000/500 series had both type cylinders opened and closed. I'll have to look but the case may be machined for open as standard?

I never seen the 166 run but the 5000 was the runningest 3 cube chainsaw I ever saw.

Buying the 353/2152 top end really doesn't offer any improvement over what you have. 2153/346 is the only route to go if you are going to replace it.

But........before tossing the current cylinder try deleting the gasket and doing a muff mod. Those cylinders actually run pretty good, and you might be surprised. As you already posted, it's real close to the 346OE, and the difference is not huge at all. Not enough to replace a perfectly good cylinder IMO.
