I just bought a fixer. Can any one give me the lowdown? Are they similar to the husky 266 or 268. Or neither. Are they any good?  Pics later.

They are similar to the 266,268 and 272 husqvarnas. But They are using a different intake setup, with a rubber rectangle shaped rubber boot instead of a plastic bolted intake.  The older ones were using the 2 coils setup, and late models use the single coil.  They are good saws, very popular here on the north.very tough.

Will a 272 top end bolt on?

Yeah, if you change the entire carb/intake setup. But it's really not worth it. You're only going to get a slight, hard to measure, or even notice, performance gain. Plus the Jonnys set the high idle with the choke lever, while the Huskys did it with the thumb lock over the trigger. So a 272 carb won't allow you to set the high idle, and the 670 carb won't work with a Husky jug since it needs the esternal impulse line.

670's are real strong runners, and I'd just stick with the original configuration. That's assuming the cylinder can be used, because new ones are NLA. Pistons are available, both aftermarket and OEM. But most AM pistons listed for a "268" are non-windowed items for the open port 268's. One nice exception is the forester piston that is listed for a 266. A real good full circle skirt windowed piston.

That's looks like a nice saw. I'd keep it a real 670 and not try to Huskyize it.  :)

What shape is the top end in?

I do not know yet. It has a knock somewhere when pulling it over. I'll investigate today.

The good news is the top end is good. The bad news it needs a new crank. The lower rod bearings are gone. :(
