Jonsered 920 - Getting started & shop manual ...
« on: September 10, 2012, 02:09:36 pm »
Gentlemen

Allow me to introduce myself - Chopper Harris, base in North of England.

I have been looking for a large Stihl or Husqv chainsaw resto project for several months (90 cc or so).
Decent project saws are fetching good money at the moment.

So, I have bought an old, but tidy Jonsered 920 from fleBay for £49 UK - I think this was a good price.

I have the online parts manual, which is available on several sites.
I cannot find the Jonsered 920 workshop manual, can anyone help me, please.

Here are some initial shots as I begin the strip and clean.

All useful advice or comments on Jonsered are very welcome - I am new to this brand of saw  :D

There may have not been an actual exact workshop manual?

There may have been a similar chainsaw of this family that a WS manual was available for?
We should share what we know... someone may learn...

Never seen a pdf version of the WS manual.

Using the 920 IPL you can see anything you need to IMO   http://www.jonsered.ws/920.pdf

As I said, I already have the parts explosions.

What I need is data on needle settings, piston ring gaps, small end bearing specs etc.

I don't know what data I may require, which is why I always like to kick-start a project with the workshop manual to hand.

Chopper,

I have Jonsered 910E that is almost virtually the same and the 920 as far as I can tell.  Folks on this forum have helped me bring this great older saw back from the scrap pile on two occasions and it is still my primary falling and bucking saw on the larger stumpage, when I come across it.

I will take a look through the materials I have collected over the years and see if anything provides details you are interested in, which would go beyond the parts schematic shown above.

Something interesting occurred when I came back to this thread today.  None of the pictures you attached of your 920 came through.  Last night, when I planned to respond to your inquiry they were all there and some Very familiar looking items were shown.  My wife got to the computer before I could send something and it was too late when I had another chance at it.

Will see if I might have something that would be of assistance to you and if so will attempt to attach pictures or copies to the thread.

Good luck with your project!

Nick, North West Farmer

Although related, there are a great many differences between the 910 and 920, and many parts will not interchange. I'm not aware of a workshop manual that will answer the qusetions regarding the specs you are looking for. They came with the IPL, owners manual, and safety manual.

I'll keep an eye on the thread, so ask some questions as you go through the project. Your saw could have either thin or thick piston rings. Thin are next to impossible to find, but thick are still available. These saws use a fairly thick base gasket, so substituting 1194 or such will not work, although it can be used in conjunction with the original gasket if it is torn. Careful with the rubber mounts at the base of the rear handle. NLA, but can be repaired in most cases. Hardly any of the parts for these saws are still available here in the US, and this chassis was never shared with Husky so there are very few parts from the "other side of the family to help out.

There are a couple different mufflers that came on these saws. Yours is the one that is a pain to mod, so I haven't touch it on mine. But you still get a lot of torque, without too much noise.

Chopper,

The 830/930 operators manual I scanned and sent your way came with my saw when it was new.  The information is general, but it does provide a lot of helpful information.

Scott at chainsawr.com has made major updates and improvements to his web site and is including more items in his Jonsered inventory in the 910, 920 and 930 areas.  I was very impressed with his help sections and the information he has available.  He definitely was a tremendous resource to me while I was doing some major work to my 910E.  Through his advice and parts service I had no problem getting my old girl up and running great.

For your information my saw pushes a 36 inch .404 bar and has been one of my primary falling and bucking saws on trees that are 24" to 30" diameter and larger.  Now and then I run across a Doug Fir or Redwood in the 60" +/- and the old girl has served me very well as long as the chain is good and sharp and there is no junk in the tree.

We work on some pretty steep slopes on our place so we need to lug a good supply of wedges and plates out with us so we put those big girls in the right place to avoid destroying some good wood by falling them in the wrong place.
Most of our work is thinning and taking out wind damaged trees.  Some years we take out a couple of truck loads, other years only enough for fire wood and possibly some sticks of lumber for our sawmill.

It has been such a good dependable saw I will feel bad when the day comes that parts and supplies aren't available to keep it going.  On an annual basis it is a low hour saw, surely the reason it is still going strong.  At this point in the chainsaws life I maintain and ongoing search to locate a replacement that doesn't break the bank.

Keep us posted on your progress.  Will be interested to see if Scott is able to be of assistance to you.

Good luck with your project!

Nick, North West Farmer

Chopper,

Spike 60 brought up a very important item, the rubber mounts, especially at the rear handle.
The main reason I was able to acquire my 910E at a very low price while it was almost new was the problem the loggers in the North West were having pulling on the rear handle and tearing out the rubber shock mounts.  That model quickly lost favor in the woods and until they were sold out you could get a nearly new, very good saw very inexpensively.

I have always been aware of that potential problem and from time would find myself reefing hard on the handle, but I have been fortunate and the rubber mounts have held up.  At any rate, when you get your unit into operation, be aware of the potential tear out of the rubber shock mounts if you pull too hard on that rear handle.

Good luck,

Nick, North West Farmer
