Thanks for the info Magnus.
The 272XP was Husqvarna's answer to the Stihl 044. I still own my 1988-89 044AV.
My "new" 1993 272XP is  non-decomp. When did the 272 get the decomp and when was it discontinued from the Swedish plant?

The 1993-01 IPL show a cylinder without decomp, and the 1997-01 show one with both decomp and an optional plug.

Based on what happended with other models, I would guess that the change happened late 1993 or 1994 - and I wouldn't be surpriced if the non-decomp ones were KS, and the decomp ones Mahle...

That is OK. It will turn up eventually. The little info I have of it is provided by Husqvarna here.

Yes, I know about that, but I haven't been able to find anything to support it - and it isn't for lack of trying.

At the moment I tend to believe it was about test/preproduction saws that became the 266 before hitting the market as production saws - but I could well be wrong.

Could this be a 166?

...............and if not, then what model do you folks believe it is?

Looking at the pics I can't read the decal on the starter (and the seller doesn't mention the model #).  It's a few hours drive from me.

I use my 1997 272XP (with comp release) quite a bit.  One of my favorite working saws.  I prefer it over a 372XP.

My guess would be 162.  The cyl cover has been trimmed probably burnt in the front part.  I personally have never seen a 166.

Thanks Shep.  It does look like it had the 'slit vents' at the front of the top cover like some other Husky saws of that era, and the cover has since been trimmed right at the edge of those vents.  Unless it's some uber-rare model I'm not going to bother getting it.  Too far.

Magnus, I'm certain I saw a picture of a Husqvarna 166 in one of my ChainSaw Age magazines but I think it was earler then 1978.
166 stuck in memory as an odd because of the Sachs Dolmar 166.
I'll try and post  it when I can.

....
Husky didn't retain a model with the 630 top end because they had the 262 in the line up.

Wasn't the 162SE discontinued well before the 262xp appearead mid 1989? I am quite sure it was.....

Yes, there was quite a gap there now that I think about it. Funny but the 630 was very good selling saw in these parts; outselling the 670. And Husky did leave that gap empty for a while, so you have to wonder how such a saw might have sold for them.

True, and there was at least one more oddity with Husky back then - like why they didn't make a professional 50cc model, but left that market to Partner and Jonsered...

My guess would be that with the 154/254 and 238/242 pro saws, they saw no reason to slide another model in between them.

That has been (and still is) my guess as well - but I don't really know how smart it was...... :-\
