......  2250 and 2255 look to be pretty good value. .......

Hopefully you are aware that those a plastic cased clamshell designs, unlike the other 50 to 60cc saws that have been suggested here.

Not everyone wants, needs, or can afford a pro saw.  People buying $300-$400 dollar saws want
something to cut some firewood, and want a reliable saw on a budget. Why try and sell a guy cutting a few
facecord a year a $550 2253 when the 2250 will do reliably for years for $200 less?

Didn't he say that the cheaper saws doesn't sell well in his area? My memory could of course be off....

Edit, memory was slightly off, it was about 180 - 300$ saws.

most of my customers need something that will run 18-24" bars. we don't have city folk that just need to trim their shrubs. everyone around here either needs a saw for around the farm or to heat their house.

2258 (555) is the best "farm" saw on the market in my humble opinion.  I ran a 455 for a long time as a truck or tractor saw. Same as a 2255. Our Farm Stores sell the stihl brand and TSC sells the lower cost Jonsered saws as I said before. Still think the 2252 & 2258 hit the target as they are really "Pro" level saws with mid range price points. I've had that conversation a few times with folks. The Husqvarna / Jonsered mid range / farm saw's are detuned pro saws vs. the plastic mid range saws being essentially home owner saws with more displacement. That concept articulated in a way understood by most farmers  makes sense and an extra $100 amortized over the life of a typical farm saw is also something a farmer gets. Having said that, the metal vs. plastic argument get murky when the potential user of that saw runs it, just sets it in a barn for a while.... on a concrete floor....which eats magnesium. THOSE guys would do better with a 455! (2255) or Stihl 310-390 plastic saw.

Several have chimed in with what works for them and their markets, as I am about to do. But one important thing to remember is that each market is different and one solution doesn't work everywhere. The advice from my friends Blood and weimedog is right on target, The midrange saws from Jonny/Husky are a well kept secret, and stack up very well against the Stihls when people take a close look at them. They all make great pro saws, but when you get to the mid-range stuff they take different approaches. Husky offers slightly detuned versions of their pro models, while Stihl offers gussied up homeowner saws. So, in that regard, 2252/2258/2166 are all models that sell well for me also. I also do well with the 2253 and 2260, but I have that pro market that wants the top dogs and is willing to pay the extra $100.

Bang for the buck? 2258 is the best deal out there, (oh geez, I just agreed with Walt again  :'(). But in my case, the 2258/555 is usually going to a firewood customer looking to step up from a 55/350/455 class of saw. They want more than what they have, and the 2258/555 is a nice, but not too big step up. Both in price and weight, which are usually equally important. 2166 is a good buy also, but will seem too heavy to a guy who has been running a 55.

2172 and 2188 are really tailored to the pro guy and I wouldn't stock them if you don't have those guys coming in.

The plastic stuff? I sell the 2245 and 2255. I stay away from the 2238 and 2240 in both Red and Orange. I also skip the 2250S as it is only available with the tool less chain thing and the spring assist starter. I suppose that has it's place in some homeowner circles, but those gimmicks don't play too well in my store. TSC can be a nuisance if they are always offering a free case or extra chains or whatever. You can't just throw those things in at the same price that they do.

Another consideration is what brand recognition Jonsered does or doesn't have in your area. I'm fortunate in that Jonsered was top dog around here for much of the 70's and 80's, so there is still a decent following. Starting with a brand that is unknown in a given area is kind of tough to do. If you are in a good Husky area however you can get some success by the fact that they are virtually identical to one another.

jonsered HAD a good following in this area years ago but I don't know if those guys have moved on to other brands after getting left out for so long with no servicing dealer close. The local hardware store sold them for years. I think they still have one on the shelf that is probably 10yrs old or better. turning pink from the sunlight. Dolmar started as an unknown in this area till I took them on and I am very happy with the success I have had with them. I am just getting my foot in the door with the commercial guys but they all want 90cc saws. average logger or arborist has an 066 as their go to saw. We will see how it all goes and what kind of success I have with jonsered. I told the rep to come pick up his 2260 and I would have an order ready.

quick facts for my area.
median income $27000
city population 4000
county population 92000
25 miles north is a city of approx. 35000
if that changes any recommendations or if that makes a good comparison to what everybody has already recommended.

that makes a $500 saw a pretty big investment for most folks around here. I have found doing layaway for new equipment and accepting payments for repair work over $100 has become an almost mandatory thing. it isn't uncommon to see poulan wildthings as the only saw they own and heat with wood.

THANK YOU EVERYBODY!!! cant say that enough. I think asking this anywhere else I wouldn't have gotten the honest and realistic advice that I did.

Your more than welcome, and feel free to call my store anytime to compare notes.

We also have people who use the most basic saws like wild things as a firewood saw. In most case though, they will move up to something better once they wear it out. With the cost of oil and propane heat being as nuts as it is, the value of wood heat becomes even more important. All the more so for folks who are tight on money. So, investing in that capability makes more and more sense. Getting people to understand that isn't always easy.

But under no circumstances will I accept partial payment for anything and let it go out the door. Layaway is OK, but the saw stays here until fully paid. Same for repairs. We are dealers, not banks. We sell and repair equipment, we don't lend money. Nearly everyone in this day and age has a credit card in their pocket if they are short of cash. They should run that card rather than ask a dealer to finance them. No card and no credit? Anybody in this boat, regardless of how they got there, is certainly not a candidate to running a tab at a dealer.

If you run receivables, you may be thought of as a great guy, but you WILL lose money. Little by little, dealers who do this get beat here and there. And it begins to add up. Eventually it gets to be a big number, and it's money you'll never see.

I should have been a little more clear on the taking payments. I don't let stuff leave the shop till its paid in full. layaway for repairs. I have a few businesses that are on account and pay weekly but everybody else is paid in full before the equipment leaves.

Yeah, that's the way to go.

Funny thing, but within an hour of my last post a guy calls up and says he wants to buy a saw and give me a check that's dated out a few weeks. Told him I don't do that. Gives me a bad vibe when someone wants to do that. If the money's not in the account today you have to wonder if it's going to be there 2 or 3 weeks from now.
