When the 670 became a "Super"

Found an old service bulletin from Jan 1988 that explains this and what was changed. Primarily, it concerns the introduction of a reinforced crankcase. The later air filter and holder was also introduced at this time, and also on the 625. There was a slight change to the carb, HS230B up to the 230C. There was an addition of a support plate as part of the carb mounting. The new crankcase can be identified by the round hole for the stop/start switch.

The changes were introduced on 670's beginning with serial number 748 0001, and from then on all 670 were called "Supers". The new crankcase also followed in due course on the 630 and 625.

Late 1987 fits 100% with what I thought, as the is a non-Super IPL dated 1987-05.!

If memory serves, the bulletin that explaines the Super to Super II changes is posted in another thread here, but I attach it here anyway, to keep the info together.

The remaining question is when the power specs changed from 3.3 to 3.6 kW.....

Thanks for that Spike, the 670 is one of my favorite Jonsereds and I have one here in pieces that I hope to get back together one of these days.   I still have one NOS rubber intake boot that I got from you some time back that I have been saving for this saw.

I remember the fall of 1986 the first 670 saws came into our logging camp and I do remember the crankcase issue from those first series of saws.
Also the first Stihl 064's came out that time too, I bought one of the first that came into the country.

Question; How is the cylinder porting, and specially the transfer size of the 670 cylinders, compared to the 266SE/XP, respectively the 268SE/XP/Special?   ???
