I picked up this and a clean Pioneer Holiday today at the plowing match for 10 bucks, the guy didn't want to take them home. Can somebody tell me what it is? Al? ;D He warned to not try to start without the compression release.

The closest I can come is a model 797 except the top is the wrong color according to Mike's site.

I don't see any numbers, would they be inked or stamped into the metal?

With that comp release it'll be a 795, 797, or Super 797.  Those are the only direct drive models in that series with the DSP valve.  Should have some numbers stamped into the bottom of the block.

Assuming no parts have been swapped around (happens a lot with large frame Macs).............it should be a Super 797 with the all yeller paint scheme (no black).  A 795 or 'regular' 797 will have a black tank top and AF cover.

$10 for it and the Holiday eh?  You did well.  I'll quintuple yer money (and cover shipping) and you can keep the Holiday. 8)

I found J-K and 70231 (may be 70251) on the bottom of the saw.

About all I found was IPL's from 1967 and 1969 .The 1967 showed a black top,'69 called a super 797 , a yellow top .Which is not to say the top cover color matters because being McCulloch it could be anything or it could have been changed .I know  for example the 105 and 125 it could be yellow tank black tank, yellow cover black cover .All the same color or both .Makes no sense but if you think about they couldn't figure what side to put the starter on or what carb to use .
