FWIW the comment on left or right start has something to do with McCulloch having a hard time figuring out which side to put the starter on .On both some of the 10 series plus some reed valve saws it could be either way .Seems dumb to me to have right hand start but that's what they did. Oh well they couldn't make up their minds which carb to use either it seems .They had a bunch of styles and a bunch of manufacturers .

Ok, new parts arrived, and I assembled the saw.  I had a phone mishap midweek which took down all the pics I had taken during disassembly (I had the phone backed up recently, just not recently enough to include those pics lol).  Anyways, managed to remember where everything went and I got it back together without any parts left over.  I didn't have spark at first, but I adjusted the pickup (dunno proper name-- it is inside that plastic housing under the fly) so it was just touching the crank.  Had spark after that.  Is that the way it is supposed to be -- just touching the crank, or should it actually have some tension on it?

Also this little black plastic disc with an eccentric bump on it was hanging out loose inside the oil tank.  It just fell out when I removed the cover.  Where is it supposed to go?  btw in case anybody wonders, the fins in the back ground are tracking fins attached to an S&S Mastercraft ski boat.  I included a pic of the saw assembled as well :)

edit: thought of another question: is the chain drive sprocket supposed to be able to slide in and out slightly on the drive splines?  Chain and bar not installed of course.  I didn't notice how it was before disassembly :(  Mine does slide in and out on the splines.  If it's not supposed to do that, what did I do wrong?

edit edit: I fired it up today on 32:1.  It runs great.  The high idle problem and falling on its face under throttle that started the tear down is now gone.  it runs like it should.

Now the coil .It really should not be hitting the flywheel .It should be set at about 12 thousandeths of an inch away ,10 would be better .Couple three  sheets of printer paper ,a cover off a magazine  is close enough for a spacer gauge .

I use a business card or anymore as I'm retired, an appointment card with the DR.

Maybe I'm confusing the terminology here.   The coil is not hitting the flywheel.  In fact there are one or two bumps on the flywheel that stick out further than the magnets and the coil has to clear those too, so there's no interference there.  I'm talking about the points I guess?  They are in a plastic housing under the flywheel.  Right now I've got it just touching the crank.  Are you saying that clearance should be 12 thou?  I have a set of feeler gauges.

The spacing of the coil from the magnets on the flywheel is supposed to be .010" or the thickness of a business card.

The points gap is supposed to be .018-.019" when the points rubbing block is setting on the peak of one of the lobes.

The point gap difference from the spec will change your timing if not set correctly.

Meaning if you set the points wide they open sooner advancing the spark or vica versa .Factory advance on any McCulloch is 27 degrees ahead .You can take them out to about 30 before they snap back on you.Much further you have a tough time starting them .Probabley at about 32 advance or so you won't get any spark because the cam notch on the crankshaft won't let the points close .You could file it to make it work but you are just restoring an old saw not making a kart engine .Stay with factory specs .

The spark event happens when the points open. Therefore, like Al said, a wider gap means the points open sooner. But there are limits to this phenomena.
