Mac 250 post hole auger
« on: November 16, 2011, 05:48:06 pm »
Today I had a Mac 250 post hole auger follow me home (in the back of the truck) and I'm wondering if this is a real McCulloch or maybe someones idea of special engineering.  http://smithsales.auctionflex.com/ai2/11217/20017/7403502_3CN1CF9A5.jpg

The ones I've seen had the engine sitting on top of the digger sideways .The origin of that I can't really say  nor for that matter if McCulloch ever actually built it  or any of them .They were painted yellow is all I know .

Now that 250 engine while not being the fastest ever made is noted for that McCulloch torque plus it's about 5 HP .It will spin that auger  no problem .However providing the engine is runnng good if  you ever stick it like hitting a root the auger will stop and whomever is driving the thing will go roundy round .

Looks to be a Super 250 power head?

I inherited one of these Macs as a bow saw in 1975. I thought it was the greatest saw ever made at the time. But, eventually, it seemed too heavy and awkward for my needs at the time. I sold it for $250. Later I replaced it with a Homelite 150 Auto which I had for more than 20 years . (I got tired of the vibration).

It would be neat to have the Mac today.

FWIW they also made the 250 with a black air box cover like the super .I've got one in the shed that of all things has one of those POS Walbro flat back carbs .

If it is a super though it's an 87 cc engine and perhaps the best Mac ever built of the  reed engines .

Mine had the black cover but I don't remember it being a Super. If I remember right, the time frame for the original purchase was not correct for it to be a Super.

I can't say when or what model that 87 cc engine came from .It was around before the actual super 250 though .Some variation was of course the Mc 10 kart engine which probabley still holds the record of the most wins in the kart stuff .

They made a lot of stuff that used Mac engines as a power supply .Fairly dependable and most likely competatively priced with respect to Power Products or West bend engines during that time frame .

In comparrison to say a Briggs engine they were considerabley lighter and produced a lot more power per size plus in good tune they would start in any kind of weather .

You know like a bare bones 87 cc Mac you can pick up with one hand .Try that on a 6 HP Briggs .Plus the Mac engine will run in any postion .Probabley upside down if you could get the fuel to it .On the Briggs you can't do that .

I was into karts in the early 60's and naturally Mac engines. I have not looked into it years but was thinking the first one I had was a Mac 10 (1961)? It was bought from the local Mac Dealer as a kart engine. Seems like there were some 5.8 c.i. models (MC20?) involved shortly thereafter? But the West Bend and Power Products engines interfere with my memory? I was out of it by 1963 due to college commitments.

On the kart engines there many much of which I forgot .Mc 8-9-10 -49 -40-70-91-92 101 .

It was most likely the early 60's when Saturday nights were the high light of the week with the races .I was a tad too young then, maybe 13 yrs old .By the time I got out of the navy in '71 the kart deal was just about over or it was too costly to get into .It sure was fun while it lasted though .

Some pictures

It sure looks like it all fits for "made by McCulloch".

Yeah it looks like it but either the engine is upside down or the auger is upside down .
