I used to trip over these daily while working aboard aircraft carriers in the US Navy.

HLU-196B/E BOMB HOISTING UNIT The HLU-196B/E bomb-hoisting unit (fig. 9-23) is a lightweight, portable, gasoline, engine-driven unit. It consists of a gasoline engine, speed-reducing gearbox and brake, and a cable assembly and storage drum that incorporates a clutch and a boom. All components and controls    are    mounted    on    a    two-wheeled    frame assembly.  The  entire  unit  weighs  75  pounds.  It  has  a direct,  single-cable  lift  capacity  of  2,000  pounds.  A double-cable lift capacity of 4,000 pounds is obtainable by  using  various  trolleys  and  rack  adapters  that  are available. You can extend the cable by disengaging the clutch   and   manually   pulling   it   until   the   necessary length is withdrawn. To reel the cable in, you must start the engine, engage the clutch, and carefully throttle the engine   to   control   the   reel-in   speed   of   the   cable.

USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70)
USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63)
USS Constellation (CV 64)
USS Enterprise (CVN 65)
USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69)
USS Nimitz (CVN 68)

All with NAS Whidbey Island WA squadrons of either A-6E Intruders or EA-6B Prowlers.  I was an Aviation Machinist's Mate (AD) so I fixed the jet engines and aircraft fuel systems on those aircraft.  I retired after 20 years in 2005 as AD1(AW) or E-6 rank.  I guess more of a wrench turner than a politician, LOL.

Dang I remember dad with some of those.

Few I remember off the top of my head. Kitty hawk, Saratoga,  Plank owner Eisenhower.   Will have to ask. But remember the Nimitz, Kennedy etc.

FWIW when I reported to the ship yards in Newport News the Kennedy was being fitted out .Fact I bowled on a Navy league with some of the crew .We borrowed about three truck loads of chairs from the Kennedy for commissioning  ceremonies of the Sea Devil,SSN  664 which was in Jan. of 1968 .I think the Kennedy commissioning was later on in 1968 some time .

Kevin- your Dad was a Redshirt (aviation ordinanceman).  I was a squadron Green shirt (aircraft maintenance) and a White shirt (quality assurance).

Al, I think they decommissioned the JFK way too early.

The JFK was the last of the oil burners .That might have had something to do with the short service life .
When I arrived at the yards at 0'dark thirty I thought it was a building on the pier because of poor lighting .My Lawdy was that thing huge especially compared to a submarine .
If I have the story straight the old gal was originally going to be a nuke but they changed the plans for some reason.Might have been the extra cost .Oil or not it was still 280 thousand shaft HP and would really scoot launching planes .
Funny thing about the big flat tops .You could always tell by the number of women in the bars on the Norfolk  strip if a big carrier had just deployed or was due in .Sea stories,I have a million .  ;)
