McCulloch 610
« on: November 04, 2012, 10:32:25 am »
Does a mac 610 really weigh over 17lbs PHO?

Would it make a good dependable  firewood  saw?

Parts still available for repairs?

Bar mount?

Sure does , for 60 cc it's a heavy duty Judy .Yeah you can get parts but they last forever almost .What cooks them is the impulse oilers get to leaking bar oil into the crankcase which burns off to pyralized oil which clogs the screen and builds up around the exhaust port .The carbon chews away on the piston .

Bar size is any Mac  10 series mount, some Husqvarnas will fit .About the only thing that goes wrong with them are the electron ignitions and the oil pump which you can still find on flea bay if nothing else .

Oh yes before I forget because on the design they have a tendency to pack chips under the top  of the cyinder which shuts off the air flow and will eventually kill the ignition .You about have to poke it out with a screwdriver .

Tell ya what I'll do .If one of my two will start I'll bring one over you can test drive .If it's running right you'll be surprised in how well it does .The only reason I don't use them is because I have lighter slightly faster saws now of days .

Well I got out my old faithfull 610 which proven not to be .A little bit stiff from sitting .However I got out my deceased dads' and it fired right up after a prime .I'm not one who fools around tugging on the rope forever and a day .

'taint no big deal on mine .I'll give it a shot  of Aerokroil through the plug hole and let it soak a day or so .It'll go .

Thanks for bringing the 610 over and let me run it Al. Cuts like a 60cc saw IMO just a little heavy and love the sound she makes in the cut.  Any firewood cutter would be happy with it IMO.

Wish now I would have picked the like new one up.

Old post but figured I'd put my two cents in. I picked up one a week ago, person said it was a runner. It was, few pulls with choke and one off. Idled fine, it wants to be warmed up before worked though. Manual and auto oiler didn't work. Didn't want to make this a project saw so I fumbled around with disassembly. Man, no fret, these things are really simple. They are almost begging to be taken apart. Probably should be to, mine had a ton of chips and oil in all sorts of paces. My oil problems weren't the typical (thanks Al I will keep the kerosene tip in my head for future issues) fouled up pump, but simply that someone put too much sealant on the oil tank and plugged the discharge up. Cylinder still has hone marks BTW. Used it yesterday on some hardwood and I have to say, its a runner! With its construction, ease of disassembly and good power it might just be my new favorite. People who worry about weight will not like it!

Once you get it hoisted up on a log the weight helps you .It certainly is not a climbing trimmer though .

I was amused  once at Bill Poors GTG .Bill has some nice saws but in a scaboard attached  to a 4 wheeler ATV was  good old 610 or 650 Mac .

I've said it before and will say it again .This is one of the most over looked and under rated saws in history and for usually under 100 dollars is a very good choice for a fire wooder .

Al I'm guessing that porting the muffler isn't worth it from the looks of things, its almost an unrestricted dump as it is. Not that it needs it, but my uneducated guess is that any additional power would have to come from cylinder porting, would you agree? On mine, the exhaust to gasket to muffler fit could be cleaned up a bit. That would be worth a little maybe. As mine sits though, a 20" bar is easy mode for it.
