NOS ProMac 700
« on: November 26, 2013, 11:52:30 am »
Got this over the weekend from a buddy of mine. New in the box PM700. Don't think I'll pop it's cherry either. Tempting, but I have a few similar saws, so I can leave it as is. One is a nice ProMac 800 that I got the same day.

Got a question for you Mac experts too. The owner's manual is in the box and is dated 1996. Is this right? Were they still building PM700's in 1996? Had to be near the end if they were.

That is a SWEET score.  The date issue is interesting.  The Acres listing states that the PM700 production ended in 1988.  I believe the PM4300 (same saw, different badging) was produced for a few years afterwards.   In 1999 McCulloch Motors filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy and was sold to Husqvarna and Jeng Feng.

In the mid 1990's, I remember a local shop having a PM4300 and PM8200 sitting on a shelf.  Both were dusty and had been sitting for a while.   I wish I'd bought them when I had the chance....

Looks nice, be carefull of the plastic recoil screen and airfilter knob. They do get very brittle with age.

I think Mac circled the drain in '98 so '96 would fit .I have one of the last of the 10-10's from that time period which is pristene .

It was originally intended as a ground saw for a tree company but never got much use .They were okay firewooders but for pro service quit frankly they couldn't  cut the mustard with Stihl .The 700's could though .

Fact one of my 700's  even being in semi retired carried the load for about three weeks when my bud the trimmer had his saws stolen .That and a Stihl 038 mag which had already been rebuilt three times .

I bought another one of those funny sounding no vibration saws from that same guy!
