Pro Mac 650
« on: November 16, 2014, 09:55:14 am »
I recently picked a Pro Mac 650 that looks to have been sitting for the better part of it's life. Got it running and the oiler would not work at all. I thought it might be a pump prime issue? Anyway manually pumping did nothing so I pressurized the tank with ~15 PSI with the pickup in oil and the manual pump kinda works now. It spits a combo of air and oil out the hole. Too early here in AZ to start it on a Sunday but I'm hoping the diaphragm is OK and it has just been sitting too long. This saw looks to have had very little use so I'm not sure if that is good or bad for an impulse type oiler?? Anybody have a thought?

Hi Al, my latest Mac is a little used 650. Runs good has ~150 comp. Damn thing won't oil. The diaphragm looks OK and is not ruptured and I can force oil to the bar port with air pressure and manually it now oils a bit..... You reference problems with these things too. I have a number of Macs and this is my first oil pump problem.Should I just replace the diaphragm? It looks fine other than a witness / stretch mark from the plunger. I might just switch out one from another saw but.......Ed

Thanks mcbob I have a diaphragm on the way, small investment for a great saw. Heavy but strong. Running a 33" bar so needless to say Too much is better than not enough.......

The later 650's used the same piston as the 610 as the early 650's were a more high performance type of piston and cylinder ..... now how far through the production time Mac changed them back to the 610 specs I don't know.

Heavy and yellow brick style they were an extremely durable saw and pretty easy to work on

On that oiler you can try the kerosine trick which works some of the time .That danged bar oil if let set for a long time will about turn to wax in the pump .If you try running about a half a tank of kerosine through the system often times it cleans up .You probabley have one of the check valves plugged up .

I've had the diaphragm oilers apart but never had much luck resurrecting one for some reason .I found a guy on flea bay that had a couple hundred new ones for 10 a pop and bought 4. Should have bought 20 .

OK new diaphragm and same lack of oil, I would try the kerosene thing if I had any. Perhaps another plastic friendly solvent? Simple Green? Where are the check valves referenced by Al located? As I mentioned there is no restriction between the oil tank and the bar orifice... I'm thinking a quick swap with another saw...hate adding variables and failure modes to a working saw..........Ed

Don't use Simple Green or any other caustic water based cleaner.  Use some diesel if you don't have kerosene.

Diesel or kerosene always elicits a few comments (mainly mumbles under her breath) when I come in the house.
