I found this saw on a shelf for sale down toward Columbus. When I made the trip I had in mind to make sure this saw gets to Al Smith someday.

Right now it is only pulling 110psi on my gauge, but just looking inside spark plug hole and through carb area after removal i am not seeing any scoring. Could be stuck rings or maybe scored where I cant see. Has spark and plug gets wet.

I'm not going any further with it and stuck it on a shelf.

Maybe Al will do us a step by step on it when we hook up. Sound good Al?

As soon as the weather breaks .I'll do a pictorial on it as to what I find .It can't be too much considering the exterior shape it's in .

I've said before I cut my teeth on 10 series Macs long before I ever owned a Stihl or any other .

kevin, these saws liked to ingest bar oil through the 4 bolts that hold the bottom of the crankcase to the cylinder. this would either hurt nothing, and gum up the rings AND decomp. or gall the hell out of the cylinder and piston. i have seen both. if you didn't see any bad stuff in there chances are the rings and/or hopefully just the decomp is gummed up and leaking. looking at the muffler screen, it looks like it was running on bar oil.
when I grow up, i wanna be an adult.

Another short coming of the bottom exit muffler used on all of the 10 series is the fact the exhaust has to basically make two 90 degree bends to get out .

I've never as yet seen a tank type oil pump leak real badly but some will over time .The oil will  clog the screen and carbon  up the ex side of the piston chewing away at  the piston .I've only seen this though on the pm 610 style that used an external diaphragm pump .

Whatever caused it to stop running had to have happened very early on or the saw had sat for a condsiderable time unused  since about new .The cosmetic appearence  shows that real clearly .

I could speculate a lot of things but would probabley be incorrect .If arraingements can be made perhaps this coming weekend I can get my hot little hands on it and know for sure . It could be a 15 minute deal or a teardown, you never know . I probabley have a new set of rings some place in all that mess .

Then again they could be a little sticky from sitting so long .My sp -81 could be spun over at first with no decomp . After a new lease on life and some running time it will snap your fingers if you try that now .Mean little rascal .

Let me babble on about these 5 cuber piston ported Macs .

I've heard people compare  them to an 066 Stihl or a 181/281 Husky .Trust me they aren't . While they have plenty of pulling power they lack the speed but in a given days cutting they can get a lot done .Enough to wear the average guy out I'll tell you that .

They aren't all that heavy ,The suspension system is not as good as others but it's good enough . They aren't that easy to modify because they are a clam shell  design .

For what they are and when they were built they can still deliver the goods .It's always been my feelings that if  McCulloch had more modernized and done further develpment on this or any other of the ten series they could still be a contender today .That didn't happen though  history is what it is .

A 125 is a big old power house . It's kind of turned into a cult following here of late .

It was made in the days of old growth cutting in the PNW and does extremely well in large stuff . However over the blocks at a GTG on cants a good running 70 cc will out cut it .

Although rumor has it they are heavy the reality is a Stihl 084 ,Husqvarna 3120 and a Mac 125 all weigh within a pound of each other .Of the three most likely the Mac would be the slowest but in a days cutting likely you couldn't tell much difference .

They are more of a collectors item now of days . I use mine but it's so seldom a large saw is needed that the pair of them will likely last forever .

These are one example of the externally mounted impulse operated Mac piston pump oiler .This oiler will ampley oil any length bar that saw can pull with oil to spare .I mean you can make them blow oil like a geyser if you want .
