Starving for gas

Ok so I am new here. I have a Mccullock Mac 110. I have been trying to start this chainsaw.

Ok here is the story. This chainsaw was bought I think back in the 1970s by my father. He said that it had shut down and he couldn't get it back going. That was in the 1970s. So it was put on a shelf and kind of moved from place to place and was a project that was supposed to get to. Well he passed and never got to it.

Now fast forward to today. I have rebuilt the carburetor and cleaned it out. I got the chainsaw going but it starts for about 10 seconds and then it dies. I think it is starving for gas. When I had the thing apart I noticed that there is a sponge type piece in the gas and oil tank. It is where the gas piece from the carburetor fits in to the gas tank. This sponge is hard and not sure if it is supposed to be soft. I blew through the top of the tank to get all the old gas out but didn't take the sponge out. Wasn't sure if it came out. Can some tell me if it even is supposed to be there and if it is soft or hard?

Why may it not run.

It's probably what's left of the old gas filter .I think on the Mini's which is what a 110 is,I think they had a metal type filter with a piece of felt like stuff around it   .Which could have hardened up .You could have sucked some crud off the bottom of the tank and plugged the carb .The kits BTW for that certain model of Zama,if that's what it is are very hard to find .
Another thing.Because of the age,which it's not a new spring chicken the fuel line could have a crack in it up above the level of the gas in the tank .You might get enough sucked into the carb to start it but it dies after a few seconds .
Minis which BTW are the most frustrating saw to work on ever made are famous for one thing .They either run great or they don't run at all .Fact I was given one,non runner that had the original McCulloch chain on it that had never been filed.

My dad bought one of these new back in 70's and still has it.  It vapor locks once it gets hot from running. Lets just say it isnt my fav to use. I gave him my ole poulan 2000 I bought new in 94 later on to replace it.

I remember that felt weird looking filter in the tank. Maybe IPL above will help. IMO run new line and change filter.  Also make sure when rbuilt carb you got the order right putting gaskets and diaphragms back in.

Thanks for getting back to me. If I getting what you are saying the fuel filter is in the tank on one of these. I put the chainsaw together 2 days ago till I heard back. Was going to take apart again and look at tank. Should the gas be free flowing through the filter when you tip the tank over because it isn't. Whould have a clue where you could even by a new filter for the tank. I have now looked at 2 parts books for this chain saw and neither has it. Any ideas what else I could use.

Give me a day or so to check what's up .I have a few minis in the shed .One with a tuned pipe as a matter of fact .Maybe the  only one in the world .
