Zama
« on: August 12, 2012, 09:44:18 am »
More of a rant than anything .These danged carbs can have the same basic designation but can be almost completly different within a certain model designation .

Now I got into one yesterday that had me pulling my hair out and it's getting thin anyway .Odd ball model C1 from a 1981 McCulloch weed wacker .The danged kit came with both the hard check valves and the soft .That SOB would not pump using just the soft and only after I doubled them up using the hard over the soft . That's the first time I ever saw that and I've rebuilt a bunch of carbs .

Now the good thing is I found another supplier ,a bit pricey but they give good service and carry a complete line of Zama stuff . I had been using Tulsa engine but the smart alecs went all "e-tail " with no customer ordering over the phone .Old Al doesn't do business that way .http://www.lawnmowerpros.com/zama/Zama-Carburetor-Rebuild-Kits.asp

Al, have you ever priced some of the new carb lately? Example.....kit $10. 20-25 minutes of your time to take apart, clean and reassemble. A new carb may not be $30  and 10-15 minutes of work and your running..........just a thought.

Actually no for the simple reason I generally have pretty good luck with carbs .Also in this praticular instance that model of the C1 was only used by McCulloch for small applications .Zama C1S M8 .

Just what annoys me about Zama as compaired to say Tillotson .With Tilley you get say a kit for an HS and it fits all of them .With Zama you have to be model and type specific and there must be a million of different individual types .

I ran into this on the 200T carbs also .The saving grace on that is the newer kits have mylar checks which are more ethanol resistant than the old standby buna -n types .At least they're supposed to be .

Oh well ,carbs .I always get them sometimes it just takes longer . ;)

After thought : The only reason I fiddled with  that little 14 cc weedwacker is because it's light weight and is going to my tree trimmer buddys' wife who is a small lady .She can't handle those heavy straight shaft Stihls he uses in his business .

I tried it out yesterday mourning and it fired on 4 so it looks like I have a winner .

We quit putting carb kits in alot of small Zama carbs. Some carbs are cheaper. Cost on some is only $13.

Well yeah I can agree with what both of you said except for the fact this was rare one .If I went the flea bay route that danged dinky carb would have set me back 30 bucks and I only payed 2-3 bucks for the machine 20 years ago .At best it's worth 25 .

As I type at this very minute I have less than twenty in it and it's worth every bit of it to bring a smile to that kind lady's face . ;)--besides that the old man gave me a Stihl BG 85 blower his idiot crew people ran over which I got running today.48 bucks parts ,flea bay and one hour of my time on repairs and what a nice blower it is . Oh my is it a nice blower  ;D
