John Deere 2 cycle pushmower
« on: June 24, 2014, 03:27:53 am »
I was told that I could purchase this as my father's day gift. It is a john deere 2t 4hp sp mower. (On the right. The other is a 14sb with a kawasaki 5hp) It is powered by a lawnboy f series engine with a BBC or blade clutch. It needed a coil but I had an older lb in the junk pile with a bad engine so a quick swap and it runs great. The only thing I do not like about it is it a single speed drive as where my 14sb is a 5spd and much faster. I picked up a couple 14sb ' s this weekend so I hope to accomplish a tranny swap in the near future.

I have used many of the pushmowers with 2 cycle engines(Robins, tecumsehs, zenoah/briggs) and honestly these OMC lawnboys seem to have the most grunt & will power through heavy grass as most others bog & die.  They seem to be indestructible as well. This one doesn't have the "cherry bomb-in-a-can" sound though as it has a side muffler due to the blade clutch. It is still fun to add a little marvel to the mix & watch it puff away. Mosquitoes are horrible here in KS so I like to think it helps with those. That's my excuse anyway. I love the isolated air filter on this one and I've never seen it on a lawnboy or any other mower. It is the hose going up in the back. It attaches to a screw on adapter in place of the air filter cover and a snap top canister up high for easy af servicing plus keeping it up & out of the typical dust/junk associated with a pushmower.

My bro was b----ing about not being able to replace his last 2 stroke lawnboy. Said the new lawnboy was a 4 stroke?   All I know he has had 2 stroke  lawnboys for long as I have known.

So is this true, no more 2 stroke lawnboys in US?

The two stroke lawn mower has been gone in North America for almost 15 years thanks to our planet's best friend Mr. Nader and his merry band of zealots. After Toro bought the brand they threw four strokes on cheap steel decks and sold them the box stores.

Yes no more 2 strokes but Toro did put out one last 2 stroke after they purchased the lawnboy name in the 6.5hp silver series engines. Besides coil failures they were very strong engines. I have one on a sp deck that runs great and although single speed is very fast. If I get bored this winter I might look into mounting it to the deere mentioned above if the crankshaft & blade clutch can cooperate with each other. I don't know who designed this engine but it wasn't an OMC designed engine.  I also do not know when they quit making them . I have delt with many of the tecumseh powered lb's as well.  Now they are out with a completely different deck design and whatever is cheapest to power it. Sad .........

I have 4  2 cycle Lawn Boys, one really old that needs a little TLC. One of the 6 1/2 horse models with a bag, one plain one but my current favorite is the one with electric start and power assist.  Only push style mower I've used that is capable of a burn out! LOL  I keep trading up but the old ones seem to stay.
