John Deere D hand start video
« on: November 01, 2017, 09:53:26 pm »
@Al Smith you have to see this. We were talking about hand starting these old 2 cylinders notably the 501 cubic inch D model.
Well this good ole farm girl from Kansas shows how it's done. She's actually a commercial airline pilot with over 3000 hours under her belt.
Priceless entertainment...watch the whole 7 minutes.

;D There's a trick to it .Choke on ,mag off .Roll it over twice then 1/2 choke mag on .Just like a kick start Harley
Three sounds I hope I can hear forever.A Harley vee twin at 80 MPH,A big marine diesel under load and the sound of a John Deere big two cylinder under load

Back in the day we had a tricycle 70 popping John.  @ idle you could put the front end against a big tree and it would just dig it down to the frame.  Don't miss it just love the torque and sound.

I grew up a few miles from an area in Ohio called the great Scioto marsh .It was swamp land that was drained and had the richest organic soil in the country .Once the onion growing capitol of the world .They normally years ago used crawler tractors because of the soft soil .I've heard stories of old John Deeres sinking up to the frames by sitting at idle too long .

Our farm neighbor got his hay bale wagon and Case 930 diesel tractor stuck in a mud bog. I was about 14 and offered him a tow with my Dad's JD D.
He laughed but didn't laugh when I pulled him and his 85 h.p. tractor out. Then I backed up, hooked up and pulled the wagon out.

For some reason the model D does very good on loose or wet soil .My buddy has a later model D and believe it or not can plow in high gear with it although that does make the old gal bark a little .
We took turns belting up to a big grain separator at our county fair .I had one of my A JD's,1946 on it and it made the old thing bark .His D almost never even **** the governor .

Mind you I pulled that wagon and Case tractor with a 30 foot heavy logging chain from different angles of approach on semi solid ground. But the old D had some gumbo to contend with .
Our D was a newer model with a 3 speed so she had a fair ammount of power. They weren't geared very high, high gear would do about 5 mph.
They were a short wheelbase tractor with alot of weight back at the rear tires. Fluid filled rear tires were wide spaced too so they held the ground level for good traction. Something about that heavy chain drive and gearing plus the weight of that big heavy flywheel momentum working with that low 900 rpm 501 cubic engine made lots of pulling power.
I always wanted to restore one and tour around the little prairie summer plowing matches and threshing exhibitions I grew up with.
The forest was always only my "2nd home"in my mind. ;)
