Quest for a V belt
« on: February 13, 2018, 04:55:56 am »
icked up a curb side found MTD snow blower with the Idea it was made with steel if it couldn't be fixed. Got it home and unloaded and right off the bat decided the motor was going to cost a bit to be saved as several shroud pieces were missing along with the carb, the tires were weather checked and wouldn't hold air but tyhough maybe tubes could give them a bit more life.
So it sat in storage for about 3 years till I could find the funds and parts for the engine.

Then I got a job where I made a nice chunk of change that was not required for other things and bought a HF Predator engine, since I was not having much luck finding shroud parts Also bought a pair of TSC rotortiller tires.

Installed the tires and motor on the snow blower and at that time decided i was going to install all new belts on it also, 2 required. One for the traction drive 1/2 x?? inch and one for the auger drive 3/8 X ??. For the traction drive I used the belt masure stick at TSC and got the right one. For the auger I measured the old one and it was a half size. TSC then didn't sell half size belts and still don't today 3 years later,m they didn't even stock 3/8 belts then so it was special ordered.

That belt blew Saturday after some very hard work over the years. Ran the numbers on the computer and evewry thing kept comeing up 3/8 X30 and TSC today does carry 3/8 belts up to 36".
Well the 30 inch belt I bought didn't fit at all by a good bit and I have a foot of snow on the drive I need to remove.
Go to a auto store that sells belts and they have in their employe a computer whiz. Takes my model numbers with the last number maybe a 0 or a D. Ran it with a 0 first and then with a D. Bingo up came the PDF owners manual with a parts list and numbers but no sizes.
Run the part number the required belt came up as 3/8 X38". They carry none of that size and on a Sunday can not order any nor know the price, but a guess is around 5.00 to 6.00.

Young fell had Monday off so left a note for the Manager monday to call about a price and call me about ordering a couple.
Didn't happen.

I still have that foot of snow to remove and a doctors appointment Monday afternoon. I load the Sno Tek I use at home to do the path to the barn and other paths on the trailer. Make my doctors appointment come back home hook up to the trailer and go and remove that foot of snow. Leave the Sno Tec there and bring the MTD home belt less.
Amazon has the belt as a preiumn for 9.00, Dayco indrustral for the same price.
Napa the V belt guys have a KIevlar for 4.00 pluss 6.99 shipping for two. This NAPA isn't the blue and yellow auto parts store how ever.

So today the quest for a pair of V belts continues. Will go see if the computer whiz is working today first off.

What size are you looking for exactly? You mentioned half size but didn't give the dimension. I work at a blue & yellow auto parts store and should at least be able to get you a part number to work with.
We just drag them down..... Until they're just like us !!!  BNL

Stopped at TSC for some reason to get the price for them to order the belt. I told the guy screw that when he said $10.00. I can get it for 8.50 off Amazon, but we went to Auto Zone and I got one they had in stock for 5.71 cents out the door. Had to order the second one .

Thanks for the offer.
