They have a valve shift assembley which holds the exhaust valve open which allows the easy spin start .Once they start the comp is the same as a non easy spin .It certainly makes a difference in pulling one over with a recoil starter.

On the electric start Briggs the solid state coils have a built in spark retard for starting .If the coil fails it will flat lock up the starter ,It just can't spin it on full advance .The smoke tries to leak out .Once it's all gone the starter stops working ,magic smoke . ;)
