Oiler issues were common on these after talking to a dealer that sold them local.  I have fixed a few in the past also for others.

There was a service bulletin in 1986, I think, which updated the oiler gear on the crankshaft and the oiler itself on the 490.  Did Partner have the same update?  My 490 does not put as much oil as I would like and I do have the updated oiler.  How can you fix/improve and oiler?

All I know is there is black and white plastic colored oilers and some are coarse and some fine and you have to make sure not to mix them up with wrong worm gear.

I found on my 500, that it provides the most oil to the bar when the adjuster is turned fully counter clockwise.

I will look at it when i get it ,but if the worm gear needs to be replaced I have read I need a special tool to remove it from the crank shaft is this true ,or is there another way to remove it? To be honest I have never seen one . In my service manual it says i need a tool.

Yes, you will need a special tool.  I messed my old one up trying to get it off with heat.  It screws over the threads of the oiler and then you either pull it or by screwing it on it pulls it off.

Well as it turned out I did not have to remove the worm gear after all. I worked on the saw that I bought yesterday ( a 5000 $65.00 ) that the guy said he gave up on after the oiler quite for the second time about 4 years ago. She had so much compression it reminded me of when I bought my first 5000 plus new.So I put her on the bench last night and started to take off the clutch to get to the oil pump, and I decided to check somthing out first. Sure enough he had the oiler shut off. New fuel lines, tank vent hose, Gas and I got rid of his old oil way to thick for my liking. Then started her up shoots about a tbl spoon of oil every 3 sec or so and runs great. I bet this saw does'nt have 4 coards of wood on it.
The second saw I bought the night before was a 500 that a tree fell on ($40.00) had a broken "D" handle ,Carb, plastic pulse tit that goes into the base .Put some of my spare parts on her and man dont she cut good runs like a top.
Also today I took a spare 5000 plus jug and piston and an old 5000 base, carb, replaced a broken flywheel, clutch and coill and built a 5000 . It runs really well and looks like factory except I had to use a black chain brake cover. I guess other than time this one is $ 0.00 invested.
Tomorrow I think I will dig into the spare bases I have and build a 500 as I only have the pieces right now for a 500 handle. So that makes 4 5000's and 2 500's I have some really nice working saws.
