Here is 5000 plus wife found yesterday and a 50 mile round trip lands it. Came with original paperwork in back ground.

Guy  had bought 5000 and S65 new around 84 time frame. No longer heats with wood and selling off saws. Still has the partner S65 with 20" and 3 chains for $225. Similar looking shape.

I bought the above 5000 as a non runner.  Guy said it was running and it cut out and never restarted since.

I checked spark from old coil, had spark. Changed plug and shoot it with mix. No go not even fire off. So I put in another  coil and tested, duh that coil no spark. So I pulled a coil from running saw and put in it, had spark. No go. So I pulled good carb off running saw even though I knew it should fire off with other carb and good coil. Still nothing.
Piston looks just like a new one with horizontal lines on intake side.  Cylinder looks good through plug hole on exhaust side. I haven't checked PSI but it feels good. Guess I should pull muffler and look at exhaust side of piston.

I dont see any bare spots on the on/off wire where it could be grounding. Guess I could swap a known good wire there too.

So what am I missing?

Found it. Ring stuck about a 1/8" on exhaust right side with a hair of score in that area. Weird cause it had good compression, why I never pulled muffler.  No biggie.  Winter fix.  ;)

Picked up my ebay 5000 PLUS today. I think the only thing plus is the top cover. Took the old ported 5000 cyl to the machine shop today. .030 coming off the base.

Couldn't go to bed without checking. 44mm closed port in great shape. Now to get a new 246 piston to put in it.

What do you get by using the 246 piston? Tighter squish?

Art I remember the first time you had posted about using a 246 piston in the 5000. I just cant remember all the particulars of that build.

Would you share this info with us here? I remember something about shaving or cutting both wrist pin bosses on the inside of piston to fit the 5000 rod. But that is about it.

Well the clean 5000 is now a runner.

I used the piston out of the demo 5000 saw. The one in the clean 5000 was usable as cleaned up, but I felt the demo saw piston was a better choice for such a clean 5000.  Other piston will go back in the demo saw someday if I quit stealing parts from it.
