Reading about how great the 5000's were picked up 2-5000+ on Ebay.
Shep

325 chain with 7T  and some 3/8 chain with 7T same saws. Same  3/8 chain was run and was new out of box chain.

Here is some of the saws ran in 12" hardwood today. Thinking wood was cherry or hard maple.

stock husky 346xp 50cc,  325 7T  10.0 10.4,   3/8 7T  5.63  5.62

stock dolmar 5105 with 5100 muffler,   3/8 7T  5.59  5.50

stock partner 5000 , 3/8 7T 5.47 5.84

stock 357xp, 3/8 7T  4.29  4.34

Just to show how good they were and are.  ;)

I bought a s50 in 1982 and had it for 30 yrs. It was my only saw for about 15 yrs. It was still running when I gave it to a friend who is also a member here. I recently got to run a s50 that has  a p/c from a s65. It is a very strong running saw.

10.0 10.4 with .325 blows my mind.  That is a major difference.  Everybody is always talking .325 on 346's.  Proof is in the clock.  Will be switching my 346's to 3/8.  WOW!  16" bar I presume on .325 and 3/8.

16" 325 and 3/8. I'm thinking the 3/8 was oregon  round chisel and the 325 was windsor round chisel.

I wish I would have ran the 8T 325 rim on the 346 too now. I still think 3/8 is the way to go if the saw has the guts to pull it.  Reason I say that is because I have 490 and 5000's that wont pull 3/8 like some of them do so they get 325.
IMO if someone is running a ported 346 on 325 for faster cut times it is because something is off inside. Like to high of transfers and or exhaust, lost some torque and just dont have the guts to pull 3/8 with authority JMO.  ;)

If you look at the 026 ported times with 325 7T 8T and 3/8 7T you will see that is the case with it. The transfers are just to high after cutting base for gasket and pop up with raising everything back up.  It isnt the fastest gtg cookie cutter for timed cuts, but with 325 RSC and 20" bar 7T she cuts it in the hardwoods buried.

It doesn't make sence at all, if the chains were as equal as possible, and the saw anywhere close to stock.

However, the Windsor chain I have tried in .325 were pure POS....

Put a 3/8 chain on a 50cc saw and file to its power and it will beat a .325 chain every time. Its the chain that cuts, the saw just turns it. There is a vast difference between filing a chain and knowing how to file a chain.

Niko 346 50cc saw was stock like you buy off the shelf. No muffler mod or anything. I just ran stock off the  reel 325 3/8 chain as they came from factory. No touch ups factory sharp, so as fair as I could make it.

Now the only thing that could have pulled it closer IMHO would have been stihl 325 RSC and 3/8 RSC chains.  But I didnt have any factory sharp on hand. What I have was already hand sharpened in past.

I agree with you 110% Art. The only thing about .325 i like is its less grabby when limbing.

I have a 8 tooth .325 setup on all my softwood saws. Like how they handle in the limbs and I can get them very close to 3/8 performance in the butt.

Firewood saws got only 3/8 setup however.
