yard sale 5000's
« on: August 04, 2011, 07:59:13 am »
hey guys, been a while. been busy working and house stuff :) then stupid heat exhaustion for a couple of weeks. last time i do hay for friends.... ;D
was out last week and found a couple of gems:

both have a little under 170 psi comp, the cylinders/pistons look great through the exhaust and intake, and semm to run pretty good. they both need the usual carb attention as well as the fuel lines, and are missing a couple of screws. not bad for $125 8)

;Di think imma gonna keep them around for a little while ;D
they are both missing the bottom support bolt fot the muffler the "grey" saw had a pipe plug where the oil cap was supposed to be:

and the "black" saw i ended up breaking a muffler bolt while taking a look in side. no biggie, replaced it with a regular bolt with the same sized square head and cut it to fit.

had to fix the kill switch wires on both saws
the rear antivibe mounts were both very loose.
the guy also had the filter covers switched between the 2 saws.
bars and chains are pretty well wore out, but he managed to throw a couple of new sprokets on the saws anyway. new bars and chains are being picked up this weekend. as well as the carb kits, fuel line, filters and another selection of gasket paper.

one might even be seeing the degree wheel soon 8) maybe :D

also noticed, the "black" partner has 3 bolts holing the pull start cover on, while the other has 4...
the "black" saw only has 3 holes in it for the bolts. any reasoning on this?
also: what saw is the older of the 2?

The black partner you are calling is the one that has silver tag and just partner 5000 plus with black handles and writing right?  It should be the older one with 3 bolt hole cover.
The Pioneer/partner one will have grey handles and writing. I am guessing this one is the newer one with 4 bolt hole cover. I dont recall my dozen or so in the past having a black tag, but then again I could have just overlooked it.

I'll see if I have a rear tag shot of my first 5 of them I had.

yeah somebody probably replaced the 3 bolter with the "newer" 4 bolt side cover. it has the 4 bolt holes but the case doesn't have the 4th hole for the screw. sort of mixed me up the first time i noticed it. tried to put one in there until i pulled the cover off and finally noticed there wasn't any threaded hole for it :D
the silver tagged saw has '1984' lightly stamped on it above the serial #.

I never seem to do so good at yard sales .The best was a Lombard Comango which started this whole idea of restoring the damned things to begin with .

Most generally it's some old boat anchor or a Craftsman version of a Poulan .Usually on the later it's just funky gas or a bad fuel line .Buy em cheap and flip them cheap.

;Dal, thats usually my luck as well. these realy weren't a part of the sale, but i noticed them sitting there and asked the guy if he had thought of selling them. he just bought a nice new stihl ms290 and was happier than a pig poop with it and never gave the partners a second look. he came up with the price, i said yes, and he, his wife and me were happy :)

Not that I have but every so often you can get lucky .A few years back my buddy picked up an 026 that looked like new but had set around with funky gas so long the carb needed rebuilt .25 bucks, hard to beat a deal like that .

I rebuilt the carb for him during my coffee break at work with about ten people watching as if it were magic or something . ;)

My personal best has been a 200T from a dealer no less for 20 bucks that had tossed the pin for the chain brake which lodged in the flywheel .Took about an hour to fix .Bring em on,luv it . ;D
