If anyone is actually reading/evaluating this tutorial there will be an update today 1/23/2014.

Halfway home, we are putting the saw back together.

Cheers

The conversion will work directly on the 261/262XP saws because they share the same 48mm bore. Will also work on one other member of the 254XP/257/261/262XP family of saws with some more parts substitution.

The 257 saws have a smaller bore, 257/46mm. So one would have to switch the cylinder/piston and in the case of the 257 the intake tract would also need to be replaced!

If you are lucky enough to have a 254XP or 257 leave them alone they are great little saws. If you have the somewhat anaemic 261 the conversion will put a smile on your face!

Cheers, KilliansRedLeo

How about the shorter rod on the 154/254 cranks? I suspect that one is not compatible with the 262 top end (or the 257 one)?

 ???

Troll is correct on the shorter rod. It has been a long time since I have had a 254 in here that I totally forgot the shorter rod in the 254! Have done a 262 top end on a 257 but never tried a 257 top end on a 254!

Thanks for the reminder Troll!

Something that I don't know is if the deck hight of the case also is different on the "54" saws?

Troll I think farmboy would know that he does a lot with 254s. We will just have to wait for him to come along so we can both find out.

Thank you Alan! Now you will have to find a nice 261 and follow the guide and see how well the guide supports the build. 261/262XP saws are nice, after a MM and a little tweaking they will run better and be lighter than a 365 special and keep up with a stock 372. Find one, do the mods, if you don't like it, I'll buy it!
