Chainsaw Revival?
« on: March 26, 2015, 02:18:22 pm »
I buy a lot of Chainsaws/Blowers/Trimmers, on CL , Pawn shops and eBay. The first thing I do is clean the saw thoroughly with compressed air after scraping built up crud. I then proceed to start teardown.
It is getting more common to see someone on video or through photos of engine teardown before cleaning, with all the crud that some of which has to fall into the crankcase of engine.
Just the other day, I was in a shop where they had three chainsaws for sale that wouldn't run. One was a Dolmar 520 that had the head removed and was torn down nasty with crankshaft covered with dirt. Only had light scoring that would have cleaned up. I bought the other two but passed on the 520.
I guess some people just don't work as clean as I like to.

I am fussy about that too. I hate working in muck, got out of heavy duty mechanics after a short stint because of that. I get a much better feel for the condition of the machine and it is a lot easier to find dropped wrist pin clips and bearing needles on a clean bench.

I guess part of the reason I work like this, is because I used to be a certified mechanic specializing in automatic transmission rebuilding. Of all the hundreds of engines and transmissions I rebuilt, first step was to clean outside.
Just seems unhelpful to create more work because of dirt.
I guess old habits are hard to break.

He may still have the 520 for $75.00, but with me having to tear into the crankcase to be sure all the crud is out, makes it uninteresting to me. Looks very well used/abused and is just the power head. I have paid more then that for non running 520 and 540 and came out ok but Dolmar/Makita are not good sellers in my area.
