Is anyone using alternative gas?
« on: February 02, 2013, 08:47:05 am »
I hate this ethanol fuel.  It seems like I've replaced the fuel line on everything I own.

I've gone to using the Marine Sta-bil.  It's blue and costs twice what the normal Sta-bil does.   Supposedly it deals with the ethanol.  But, my goodness, the exhaust stinks to high heaven.

The pre-mixed gas that Bailey's and others are selling  has no alcohol, but the price is sky high.  So, I'm wondering if anyone is using racing fuel like C-14 or Aviation gas as an alternative.

Thanks.

I know a guy that works at the airport and uses aviation in everything. He get a free supply being it is the fuel drained out that want used.

I use a 2 stroke mix that stays mixed with methanol alcohol, so I called the Klotz tech and he stated it will stay mixed with ethanol too. I have yet to have a problem due to ethanol. KL-100 and KL-200

Klotz is Canadian, isn't it?   Can you get that online in the States?

I went to Stihl Ultra last year and  think it helped.

I buy mine online by the case.   The Klotz head tech I talked to was in Indiana I think.

This new one KL198 says it stays mixed with  alcohol  but I have no experience with it or have I ever talked to a tech about it.   http://www.klotzlube.com/proddetail.asp?prod=KL-198_Quart&cat=8       http://www.klotzlube.com/techsheet.asp?ID=153&submit2=View

Cut4fun,
I went and checked out the web pages you linked.  Looks interesting.  I remember on a hotsaw site a few years ago there was a guy on there who was a big Klotz proponent.

Something interesting on the product descriptions was that they said the product were good with Methanol.  That surprised me a bit as methanol is wood-based where the gas we buy has ethanol, a grain product.  I would think alcohol is alcohol, but I was curious why they made that distinction.  I wrote to them, but have not had a response.

That is curious that they specifically mention Methanol, when most gas has Ethanol in it.

I use a product that is called star tron made by starbrite. It suppose to absorb the ethanol in the fuel. I have used it for about 2 years now. With great results. Its an additive. There web page is www.starbrite.com or www.startron.com. I had a 5 gallon can of gas with it in there, and was still fresh after a year. May be an option too.

I'm a pilot, and am around aviation gas (also known as 100LL) quite a bit.  I do not use it in my chainsaws.  The Tetraethyl Lead in the gas as an octane booster is NASTY stuff, and I'm not into breathing that in from an exhaust about 2 ft from my nose.

There are projects to develop unleaded versions of AvGas, but they are all probably several years away from commercial availability.  IT won't be cheap -- 100LL is going for around $6/gallon in my area, and I doubt the replacement fuel will be any cheaper.

I'm fortunate to have found a gas station in my area that carries non-ethanol premium gas year round (it was formerly only available in the summertime).

Sorry I just seen this.

Because Klotz KL-200 (marketed toward racers)  is  what the racers use to mix their alky nitro race fuels with.  Side benefit is it stays mixed with ethanol too.  ;)

I called them and got my info from their head tech first hand.
