Is it ok to reuse the muffler gasket?
« on: March 12, 2014, 12:56:12 pm »
On my 372xp there is a heat shield plate deflector then the muffler gasket. If they look ok are they alright to reuse them? Do you put any kind of sealer on them?

I do it all the time Erik. And you do have the parts in the correct order, cylinder, shield, gasket, muffler. I have sometimes used two gaskets a mica one between the shield and the cylinder and the rest as above. I do not put any sort of sealer on the gaskets. The only time I replace the heat shield is when someone has put a fiber gasket between the shield and the cylinder, which sort of distorts the shield and you get exhaust leaking out between the cylinder and shield. Muffler bolts on the 372 are to be at 14nm 123.9 inch pounds.

I re-use the muffler gasket if it is in good shape.

Have found many used saws with no gasket, the gasket on the wrong side of the shield, or the shield turned upside down, or around.

I reuse the gaskets all the time also.   If in bad shape I sometimes use a copper coat that works well.
