Likes and dislikes of modified saws.
« on: May 08, 2014, 11:05:08 pm »
So I thought that I would start a thread on the pros and cons of modifying your saws.

I know there are quite a few saw builders on here and I have read some pretty interesting posts on some of the work guys here continue to do.

I myself like playing with them doing mild modified work.   I may drop a cylinder a little, and widen the ports some, advance the timing, and muffler mod it.

I like the results because I like a lighter smaller saw that cuts like a bigger heavier saw.

If I then put a square ground chain on it then it is head and shoulders above a stock saw of the same model.

If I am cutting up rounds and the saw is just eating up the wood it puts a smile on my face.

I don't like them messed up with no torque and that get too hot after three cookies.

I use the saws that I have modified all the time and have no problem with over heating and they have plenty of torque.

The bad is some are way louder. Most saws that you just widen out end up with no more power than most with a muffler mod. If I'm not going to set the squish and timing to what will run the best then it's not really worth it from what I've done. Setting the timing and squish was worth 25% gain in cut speed.

Some saws you have to mess with them right out of the box because they are pigs. Then again the clue here is 'don't buy a saw that is a known pig'! I will mod a saw only to a certain point like 3000FPS as soon as I feel I am reducing reliability or repairability I stop. IMHO torque does the work, RPMs make the noise.

Most of my customers are pros of one ilk or another and they like a saw that performs well in a work situation, day in day out. Without having to bring it back to me all the time because it needs a new piston. Noise is another factor, it does not hurt the saw but it sure gives you a headache after using a saw all day. I saw that Mastermind was trying to come up with ways to make his saws quieter.

I enjoy experimenting with component substitution 'just to see'. Like putting a domed 028s piston in a CP Husqvarna 55. I believe that there is a lot that can be done with 'off the shelf' parts to make better performing saws without permanently modifying the saw. WD and I are both doing two different takes of a 272XP piston in a 372. The opportunity in this centers around the 272 piston which is taller in compression height but shorter overall. Potentially these differences offer two advantages 1)increased compression and 2)about a 4° change in intake timing from 76° to 80° BTDC. Two gains without touching a grinder is pretty tempting.

I'd much rather run a modified saw over a stocker...  ;D

Most bolt action rifles have a threaded barrel.   How does this one attach and get the head space correct.
