Looking for gasket material
« on: January 02, 2014, 12:22:17 pm »
Looking for non metallic gasket material suitable for cylinder base gaskets. I am getting tired of making them out of copper! I need .020 .040 .050 and .060. Anyone have any ideas?

 I have used different types of card stock paper,index cards, creal boxes and stuff like that. I have had good luck with it like that. But all these are less then .020.

That O'Reilly link show nothing about thickness or composition of the material. About all it says is that they carry some gasket material.

I'm sure O'Reilly has it too but several years ago at NAPA I bought some nice 1/8" thick composition Kevlar gasket material for my air compressor head gasket. It was hard cutting that stuff but it has lasted all these years so I know it can be done.

For carb gaskets etc I use the card stock and cardboard cereal boxes etc like in the post above.

I bought some gasket material at Discount Drug Mart that was just terrible. The harry mess would not cut crisp and clean. It made worthless fuzzy gaskets.

The cardboard from a case of soft drinks,beer whatever .The cover of National Geographic .Any relatively stout paper will work . The crankcase does not  put out the much pressure .

The local auto parts store may very well have what you are looking for after you see, measure, and feel it, Allstate and McMaster-Carr really have it all in the way of bulk gasket material.

I usually cut the inside holes and put the two parts together and use the parts as a guide to make the bolt holes.

I then trim the outside off with the gasket between the parts. I use the castings as a guide to cut off the material.

....little late with a reply.  could not find my old catalogs, but fel-pro, mr gasket, etc have different thickness sheets available.  tractor supply has rolls of cork/rubber (very thick), and some gray fiber (thin) the last time i was there.

summit racing or jegs.  http://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/KeywordSearchCmd?storeId=10001&catalogId=10002&langId=-1&Ntk=all&Jnar=0&itemPerPage=90&Ne=1%2B2%2B3%2B13%2B1147708&searchTerm=+++++++++++++++++++++++++++gasket+sheet

still have some sheets of copper around here somewhere, if you cant find what you need.

regards
