Muffler Mods Using Silver Solder
« on: December 21, 2013, 04:45:28 pm »
OK, guys what tools are you using to do this? I have a MAPP gas torch setup that I use to do plumbing and am wondering if that will suffice as a heat source. Also would like to know how heavy roll solder or stick you use. Any other tips or techniques you would recommend.

Thinking of going this route instead of brazing or MIG/TIG because I have limited space and need a small very portable setup.

Alan, that stuff (SSF-6) seems to work great! Where do you get it?

I don't know, I never used silver solder in my life, just did some searching and found that stuff.  Seems like it is pretty good, I don't like the lack of control of the puddle, same goes for brazing, but in your limited space and heat source, if it was me, I'd be looking into the product.

They make little 120 volt migs that don't need gas you know.

If I was in your shoes and wanting to learn a new,, lets say, how the F... do I fix this.  Stop out at a local welding center, prax air or rogers or who ever is around your area, bring a muffler and show them what you want to do.

I found this site just for the same reason, How the F??? do I fix this.

3000FPS may be a good lead, I'm just a backyard welder, not a pro.

Thanks Alan! Perhaps 3000fps will jump in and give me some advice. I have found where I can get SSF-6 online but there must be a better price somewhere. The stuff is pretty expensive! They do show a video of somebody soldering a Damascus shotgun barrel so perhaps I will speak to my gunsmith.

I've done several muffler outlet mods with regular brass rod and brazing flux using a ox-acetylene torch. Some of those were done more than 20 yrs ago and are still around and have not ****. I also used the silver solder with the same torch but that was on air conditioning copper lines

660, Oxy act is a great heat source, but takes up room, I know what Tim is after as far as space saving, was wondering as its very portable in a 120 wireless if this could be the answer.

As thin as a muffler is, you could get by with a MAPP GAS torch (Yellow Tank)
