Old Gaskets
« on: January 03, 2015, 11:34:48 am »
Working on an old Dolmar 112.  Nice saw.  There are a couple of fiber gaskets on the carb that I'd like to replace.  They are intact, but are very compressed.   The gaskets  are no longer available.  I guess the preferred method is to get some gasket material and try to hand-make replacements.  I'm not the best at that.   Are there any other tricks of the trade for this situation?  I'm leery of Permatex for this application.  But, I may be too cautious.

The two gaskets are important aside from the obvious because the impulse port is milled into the intake and runs through these two gaskets and a plastic boot between them.  This thing passed pressure and vacuum tests like a champ.  But, then it acted on the high end like it had an air leak.  With re-used gaskets this looks to be the best place to start.

Thanks for your help.

Reinforce paper or cardboard with cling free dryer cloths glued on with gasket maker.

Thanks, All.  Dryer Sheets.  Never would have thought of that.

I have a Dolmar 112 I made those same gaskets for.
I went on eBay and bought some fuel resistant gasket material.
I also used a leather punch for the holes.   Like you said the impulse goes through there and a leather punch has a variety of hole sizes.   I have also used a single hole paper punch if a hole that large is needed.
The rest of it I cut out with a razor blade on top of a piece of cardboard.
Take your time and you can make a good looking gasket when done.

I made those same gaskets for my Dolmar 111/115 a few years ago. I used poly coted card stock from a blister pack.

It has never given any trouble.

Get me the PN's for the gaskets you need I may have them.  I just bought a "Lot" of NOS Sachs Dolmar parts.

Thanks for the advice, Everyone.  Great info.   I used to make gaskets on the submarine years and years ago.  But, those were for pipe flanges and were really easy.  A friend got me some hi-temp Garlock.  And, I've broken out the old gasket-punches.  So, I should be good-to-go

Thanks for the parts offer, Shep.  I'm all geared up to give this a whirl.  I'll be in touch if I don't have any luck.  What I could not find for this saw was a chain tensioner screw and pin.  119 213 030, 901 506 554.  If you have those, let me know please.  Thanks again.
