Thanks for following up.  Old saw is giving me fits.  I have some research to do.  Floods right out of the chute.  I can get it to run and it tuned to a TEE right off the bat.  Idles beautifully.  Perfect throttle response.  Go to start it back up, Floods.  Got to do some searching for that.  Can't say I've run into this before.

Might be a little to late now but, I very seldom buy a gasket other then special--like exhaust gaskets.
Over the years, I have made hundreds of gaskets with a procedure taught to me many years ago. I have even made carburetor gaskets (not diaphragm).
The procedure is very simple once you are set up.
You need to purchase the right thickness sheet of gasket material. and purchase a hole punch that is made like a pair of pliers and has a dial to select hole size. For larger holes, you can make punches out of different diameter pipe and sharpening the end.
A simple way to obtain a perfect gasket form transfer is to apply a very thin layer of petroleum jelly to one of the surfaces the gasket will contact.
You then cut the gasket to approximate outside dimensions and CAREFULLY lay the material to that surface straight down without moving and press all around. I find it best to press really hard with finger tips.
It is important not to move the gasket! !
Whin finished, carefully lift straight up--and you will have a perfect design transfer to follow.

Thanks for the help.  What you are describing is what they taught me in the Navy.  But that was a long time ago.  That's what I ended up doing and it worked perfectly.
Thanks again.

Did they also teach how to "Beat" a gasket out with a ball peened hammer?
Of course, you wouldn't want to use this on a small gasket or aluminum surface.

You lay the material flat on the surface first, take the  hammer and gently tap the edges. This shears the material and sometimes it's best to do the bolt holes first (use round end of hammer) and insert a bolt or pin to hold gasket in place. In many cases, you don't even need knife or scissors.

Gasket material is available at your friendly local auto parts store.  The O'Reilleys near me stocks Felpro in sheets of various materials and thickness.  Also Victor material.

Have the counter person drag it out so you can browse.
