Sleeves for saw cylinders, coating queey
« on: March 21, 2022, 09:53:49 am »
Revisiting an old project. Sleeving  cylinders. I found a shop that does electro coating of big calibre gun barrels ( small cannons)
He offered to coat a couple of sleeves for me. But, this time instead of cast iron I want to see if aluminium sleeves are a better option. My question is would the gun barrel coating work on a saw cylinder?
Alternatively I have chromed rings made for  MS 460/461. Which is a better option, aluminium sleeves coated or CI sleeves with chromed rings?

The idea light just flashed now!
Do I really need to insert a sleeve to repair a  gouged cylinder , usual damage from a lock ring flying off or a broken ring ?
What if I were to remove the chrome and get the bore turned so that it is uniform all around and then get the bore re-chromed?
More chrome yes but lesser headaches.
The question is how do i remove the original chrome smoothly? Do I need a special metal for that?
This is an untrodden path for me so I would really appreciate any suggestions.
More because it gives me the potential to possibly repair any cylinder which is not the case with sleeves
