can't get anything to work. whether its .xls or .xlsm doesn't matter to me since i've got newer version of excel. also, the file might be dependent upon features included in the newer version of excel to it might be .xlsm anyway.
if the file were merely zipped as a spreadsheet, either .zip or .exe then i could probly open it. changing the extension from .zip to .xls has proven to be a problem for me since i can't get the file extensions to show up in my explorer. looks like i'm a dunderhead or microsoft has finally fixed us. lol
now is never here but the past is always present.

Go to control panel/files and folders/ there you will see tabs across the top in one of them there is a checkbox that says 'hide extensions of known file types', uncheck it if it is checked (default)

The file IS an .xlsm file, if you change the extension to anything but that it will not work correctly.

how to unhide file extensions

The last screenshot is why the file MUST be an XLSM file in order to work....and YES it is a macro enabled workbook however it could be saved as a .xlsx spread sheet but Joe would have to test to make sure all was working in that format.

So your saying all folks need is that unzip program downloaded ( you showed) to their puters. To open the link I embedded straight from the site?

Files types etc is all xyz to me, all just a foreign language to me. Like I have said before, not a puter person.

I remember having upzip downlad back in the late 90's maybe early 2000's but never had a need for it since.

Thanks if thats all folks is needing.

howdy folks

2007 excel was used.  no experience with trying this file on newer versions, (at least until next week) to be sure of compatibilty.

sorry about all the confusion issues with opening the file.  my knowledge of websites is nil.  killiansredleo schooled me on zipping yesterday.  appreciate his and cut4funs time and help.

if someone that wants to give it a go, after exhausting the options, and still cannot get it opened.  willing to send out a cd in the mail for those folks.  pm me if this is the case.

enjoy the holidays!

Just a clarification, if what you are looking for is to have the spread sheet operate from the forum like viewing a YouTube video, that is not going to happen. A web service that would be able to do that would need a back end application server to process the user requests from users to excel and keep all user data on the forum and keep all user data separate from each other.

Joe's spread sheet is designed to run on 'your' computer where it can communicate directly with excel on your computer and keep your data on your computer, the whole .zip file thing is only there to get past upload restrictions placed on us by the forum software and has nothing to do with Caveman.

If as noted before if you can get the .zip file from the site to your computer, unzip it and save the resulting .xlsm file on your computer it will run when you click on the caveman file, just as Kevin noted earlier.

I also thought that I should mention that there is no way to make a self executing Excel spread sheet. That would be one that would run on your computer without Excel or any other program that could process Excel files installed on your computer.

There are free alternatives to excel that may work for the caveman file, as mentioned earlier. I use a free one called 'Kingsoft Office' on my Android tablet that will run caveman.

On break from family right now.  So real  quick.

Instead of CD being needed like 1manband said he could do.   I have a copy on HD puter, is it TJ? and joe has a copy now that could be emailed to folks wanting to go that route?  Yes?

If so folks could PM us or post here to contact us then email us.  IF unable to open from site where embedded above.

Also I can send copy to Jim 660mag so he can email too. He is the only other person besides me that can see emails without needing to be  sent  a PM to do so.

My name is Tim, and I don't have a problem e-Mailing the file to members. However I did not create the spreadsheet and it is not my intellectual property, it belongs to Joe. So he would have to make the decision on who gets to distribute the file.

We could also research a freeware spreadsheet processor that will work with Joe's file and point users to where they can get it free. Or could mail it out with the file. Along with instructions on how to install the software and Joe's file.

If we did it this way Joe would get to make the contribution to the chainsaw community and you would not have to pay for storage for it

Being that the spreadsheet that Joe created is a Macro enabled spread sheet (file extension .xlsm). Joe's work can be protected simply locking the Macros with Joe being the only person with the password. People will still be able to run and use the spread sheet, just not alter the design, operation or even the ability to see the Macros. As Joe states the formulas used to make the calculations have been in the public domain for 20 years!

Joe's genius and work was in translating those formulae into Excel macros so that we could all benefit! The time and effort Joe spent developing Caveman is what must be protected.

The technique of making the macros unalterable or even visible to the end user can be simply done by Joe himself. In fact when Xerox internally published spread sheets to its' global divisions and the branch offices to collect and process financial data the macros were routinely password protected in order to meet 'Sorbaines Oxley' legal requirements.
