Not opening. Needs saved in different format that is inside the zipped folder.  Zip folder will upload here but I cant get the excel file to open.  Out of my league.

Anyone figures out how to open to read let us know.

OK guys there is nothing wrong with the spread sheet. The only reason the file was zipped up is because the forum software will not let you upload an excel (.xls) spread sheet. If you have the free utility winzip from www.winzip.com on your computer the file will download to your machine and winzip will unzip the file and excel will start.

So, the key here is that Joe zipped the spreadsheet up just so he could get it to Kevin. At which time Kevin could either unzip the file and make the .xls file available to you or leave it alone and you could unzip it on your computer.

The way it is set up now you need winzip on your computer.

Kevin I will PM you with a number you can call me at.

Correct 660, that was the original problem. You can do something called a multi layer zip file. The file I sent Kevin this evening was a single layer zip file e.g. a single .xls file that has been compressed by Winzip.

I have just tested the current file on 6 different computers:
Microsoft Windows Enterprise Server 2008
Microsoft Windows XP
Microsoft Windows Vista
Microsoft Windows 7
ASUS Android 4.1 Ice Cream Sandwich
Apple IPad
And even my wife's smart phone.

It works everywhere! As long as you have Winzip installed on your computer and something that can process zip files.

I still proclaim that it has been double zipped. Or it was already a zipped file that someone added another .zip suffix to it?  (zip.zip)

I agree that is exactly what either joe or Kevin did. The file attatched to this has a .zip extension but it is a text document created by microsoft notepad. If you download it and save it on your computer you change the name back to test.txt and notepad will open it.

ObTW, I am not throwing rocks but trying to get to the bottom of this problem.

I just did exactly as stated above and it worked. So the forum software is NOT checking the internal file format only the extension for one of the allowed types.

So, the next question is if a file with and extension other than those covered by upload restrictions can be downloaded.

If joe were to send Kevin the XLST file with a zip extension but not really a zip file then Kevin could change the extension to .XlsT and it could be directly downloaded.

So I just added a second attachment, it is an excel file (foo.xls) that I just changed the name to foo.zip. the point here is to test if I can upload and download an xls file named zip and use it as an xls file after changing the name back to xls.

That worked, son now all we hav left to test is if I send Kevin the file and see if he can do it on his end.

One other thought, the file 'caveman version 1.1 122213.zip' actually contains a .xlsm file not an .xls file created older versions of excel which could only create .xls files. I used Microsoft Excel 2007 for the tests I ran.

An .xlsm file contains multiple spread sheets MS refers to as an Excel 'workbook'. That is data can be moved from individual calculations in one sheet to other sheers within the same workbook.

Since only certain later versions on Excel recognize and can process .xlsm files, perhaps that is the problem you re ruining into when you get the file to your computer.

Additionally, perhaps Kevin uses the same method for uploading files as users do, just not restricted in size. So, when I hear from Kevin we will find out and can figure out a way to fool the software. In an earlier post I demonstrated how we can fool the software just by changing the file extension without really changing the file itself. So, perhaps that is the key.
