stuck rings

how do you guys free up stuck rings. after jabbing small screwdriver into my thumb I would like to know a better way. no rust just bad gas.

Ultimately I have always replaced a stuck ring before I declared the problem solved.

I don't hold the piston in my hand.

yes you know best but this thing looks so new i want to try it and see.  I have a vise on my bench if I had used it would not have hole in thumb.

I put it in vise and and broke ring about the third time I tapped it. cleaned it up put ring off parts motor on it. not a good thing to do but i wont be able to rest till i hear it run.

The ones I gave up on I couldnt even get ring to budge  in vise tapping.

I think Al uses Kroil to help him free up rings and heat.

even after i broke ring out that crud was hard to scrape out of ring grove. got to put it back together before i forget where all the bolts go. when i was on steam turbine repair crew we used lots of kroil. i often forget about it on less than 40 pound bolts.

I always used a piece of the broken ring to clean the groove out.
