It was an old XP.  Been a while, I don't remember whose it was IIRC it was from South Florida.  Same guy sold a Dave Neiger 5100 Dolmar.

If you guys don't mind another of my long winded posts............

What has changed over the last 10 years is that the popularity of these saw sites has brought a ton of new people into the saw world. Saws, especially modded saws, have become a fun hobby for a lot of guys. So, the demand for ported saws has gone through the roof and some guys are making big bucks porting saws "on the side". Do some simple math in your head and the numbers can be a bigger "wow" than some of the cut times.

And same as tons of new customers, there are lot's of new porters out there trolling for saw work. Some do very nice work. Some do OK work. Some do lousy work. Very few of them have the experience that a guy like Ed has. (one of the reasons he gets nice gains from the 372XT, while most others struggle with that saw).

What Al said in post #17 touches on what is driving this right now. Saw porting is very competitive. The growth of GTG's where guys compare and brag about whose saw can turn the fastest time carries a lot of weight with where guys are going to send their next saw. So, there is a lot of pressure that a saw with a particular builders sticker on it to do well. That pressure means that builders are cranking it up well beyond the definition of a "woods port" and the line between work and race saws is pretty blurred right now. It's given birth to what I call the "play saw". Nothing wrong with that; we are all here because we are having fun with saws. But with 20+ years in the saw business, I can only laugh when guys say that 220 PSI compression won't affect the bottom end of a "work saw". But since most of these play saws won't see much trigger time, it may not matter. Again, I'm not finding fault with all of this, just saying we should call it like it is.

And Al is correct that if your saws get beat by someone else's, you are old news. We've all seen it get a little too competitive sometimes, and that brings a little bit of a nasty edge to it. Competition will do that, because anytime we are dealing with winners and losers, things can easily go over the top. Especially when there's money involved. When it heats up like that, it's pretty hard to keep the fun in it.

I've learned enough that I have fun porting saws. Mostly just for myself, and I do it for the local guys. And they are definitely saws that will live in a work environment. Guys that do very precise work might call them "hack jobs", and they pretty much are!  :)  But I think it's pretty easy to get 75% of the $300 port jobs with simple mods. And the reasoning here is that the "do it yourselfer" can have some fun working on his own saws. But no way I would compare what I do with what someone like Ed does.

It's also worth noting that there's not as much of that "celebrity porting" on this site as on AS. That's because the guys on this site are generally capable of doing their own work. Whether just a stock rebuild or some basic modding. Still fits with Kevins' original thought of a site for guys who like to work on saws as a place to share what we know about them. That's why I always say it's the best of the saw sites. A lot less BS here.

Well said.  We've all seen instances where a stock saw beats a "woods ported" saw and the  stratocharged motors have a transfer/strato port balance that can be screwed up easily.

The ported saws used to not sell like they do now. Several years back like 8-10 if one was for sale then it was junk or too slow.

The more towards play saws or race saws is a lot more fun for me.

Excellent post Spike. I don't get into all the porting stuff that much but spot on with the guys who just like working on their saws and having some fun. I have a bunch of saws and not much to cut, just like playing with them and enjoy the work. And this is a great site, and all the bs I've heard about AS is the reason I've never been on there. Who needs Internet bs?

John, I don't mean to dump on AS. I'm a sponsor and spend a lot of time there, and have made many friends through that site. Always a lot happening there. Sometimes maybe a little too much. Things move real fast and it's a little hard to keep up with it all. The BS is usually from the types who have very little knowledge but have an opinion on everything. Same for the constant Husky vs Stihl arguments. But that's to be expected with the volume of people posting there.

Here it's a different world. Most guys know their stuff, are happy to share, and aren't inclined to argue about things like different saw brands.

I didn't mean to imply that my point of view was yours, sorry. I have heard of plenty of bs, though I'm sure there's also a lot of good info on there, for a long time. I'm happy to poke around here and another site or two and that's enough for me.  :D These ones just seem to be a bunch of good people helping each other out, which I like.  I have enough bs on my own accord without getting it online too!  :D :D
