Port cost
« on: January 31, 2015, 01:33:08 pm »
So why has port work cost went so high lately?  I remember when I got into the ported stuff back in 07-2010 to have a saw woods ported to the max back then  was $150.

To have a cylinder base turned down and piston cut was $40 at your machinist.

Been seeing $275 and higher now days.  On a 1K saw that isnt all bad but on a $400 saw that is just plain crazy anymore in my eyes.

Guess that is why so many folks have started to do their own porting now days.  8) ;D

Machine work is the same cost. The port work has gone up a good bit since I paid for one.

As busy as some of these porters are, I would jack the price up too.
But what sucks IMO, when the novelty wears off and you want to sell the saw, the port work you paid for isn't worth anything.

True that.  Gouge the market LOL

Only a good investment if it is one of those top runners at gtg's etc.  If average joe saw it dont add any value IMO.

when I port a saw I charge and pretty much always charged $250 with me paying for the return shipment . Today guys are doing stuff I honestly see no need to do on a worksaw , if its a play saw not a worksaw that is different but on a saw that is going to see 1,000 plus hours of run time its not needed . If you charge $50 per hour for you and your tooling you will easily be at least 5 hours cause you should test the saw and that will take close to a hour to do . I donot care if you have done 100 of the same saws , test it before shipping it out just to play it safe and now everyone is cutting squish bands , filling in ports with epoxy your going to be over 4 hours building a saw , I cut squish bands back in the 90's and I'm not a big fan of doing that , yes on a play saw but on a worksaw and with todays high test pump gas on a 70cc saw I donot want to see anything over 185 pounds of compression but thats just me

The cut squish band is ok as a replacement piston can be popped in down the road if something happens. It is more work to get the port timing back up.

Ed you being up north, Canadian.
If you were charging 250 back when I was paying 150. In todays market you should be charging almost 600 Canadian.  ;)

JMO  some of the best woods port saws I ever ran were in that 180 range.  I still in my we little mind thinks it has more to do with the porting numbers for a good running saw.

Case in point my 066 Brent Combs woods ported and many more just like it. Using info I was told passed down from his dad a logger.
It used stock piston and just good porting and was in that 180psi range.   As far as I know the squish wasnt cut.

That saw owned the gtg cant races for years and pulled a longer bar like you want a work saw to do.

Brent Combs also did one of my 084 with stock piston and far as I know no squish was cut. That saw took names at gtg's too. Then I sold it to a guy that put a 50" plus on it for ripping hardwoods for a living.

The reason I got away and sold all my pop up piston saws is I didnt want to depend on anyone to cut me another piston when needed someday.

The one saw I wish I wouldnt have sold out of all the saws I have sold in the past.

Had updated crankcase and poly fly.
