I did a search but found no clear cut answer. So, what is porting?

They usually open up the muffler, lower the cylinder to increase the compression ratio and widen the intake and exhaust ports to increase flow.

And I take it is to increase power? What would be the benefit, lets say if your porting a Husqvarna 455 Rancher.

It would carry more rpm in the cut.

People don't port Ranchers though.

Sometimes a 357XP or a 359.  346's 365's & 372's

Why not ranchers? And what are popular saws to do? so it is more for increased rpm's than more cc power?

These have been the more popular Husqvarna ones

With the widening of intake/exhaust ports as well as transfers more fuel/air can move through the engine more easily. This generally makes more power, although can go wrong if not done right. Changing port dimensions in the vertical direction as well as lowering the cylinder changes timing of the engine, which needs to be adjusted if making drastic changes. The increased compression usually makes more power also. Opening up the muffler also let's more move through the engine.

Has anyone here posted any videos of porting a chainsaw correctly. If not then does anyone know of a video where someone is porting a saw, any saw, mostly correctly. I'd like to see one done and have watched a couple of videos today but with my novice experience I wouldn't know if they were doing it right or not.
