In the 50's today and even though it has been cold, there has been no moisture this year.   I guess that is why the high plains has no trees.

Yes I can plant trees and plan on doing just that.   I have not done it yet because they need to be watered on a regular basis until they get some size to them and the roots gets well established.

When I was in elementary school my mother planted a persimmon tree in the front side yard. My dad told me that they were the most bitter thing you ever tried to eat unless you waited until the persimmons had frost on them.

Nice looking tree except in the dead of winter.

By the time frost fell around where I lived in the South, the persimmons had fallen off the tree. They would be about like hen eggs.

As an adult there were persimmons in the grocery around here during the fall about tennis ball size. They had a milky cast to their coloring. The milky cast to the coloring must have been what my dad was talking about?

In 1974 while visiting the old home place, I was charged with having to cut down that persimmon tree with a McColluch 250 bow saw as the tree had become too big for the space and was dropping persimmons on the car.

I've lived in Ohio all my adult life. Never noticed a persimmon tree around here.

Those persimmons in the South, the possums and coons usually got them the minute they weren't bitter - seeds and all.

There are some trees that will not survive the winter out at my house but they will grow in someone's yard in town like Japanese red maples, dogwoods, and red buds. Wife brought home a Japanese maple about 12 years ago. I told her it wouldn't survive. She wanted to argue so I had her put it in amongst some spruce trees and it is still living. Deer got into it early on and messed it up but the weather hasn't got it.

I was down to Pleasant Hill Lake at Mohican Lodge and up in the Black Fork creek that feeds it, I saw a sweet gum tree. They don't grow around here. You generally have to get on the other side of the Appalachians to see them. Also saw a sweet gum up town. Don't know why anyone would want a sweet gum unless they were home sick. Wood is not much better than cotton wood. 

Sweetgums were very common in the town I grew up in including one outside the kitchen window at the house. I don't remember seeing many in the old home place area out in the country but we had a house on the lake too and there was one beside the barn there. I was looking on Google maps street view and neither one are there now.
