Poulan 361 rebuild
« on: July 08, 2015, 10:33:18 am »
question for the group.
took apart and cleaned a 361. put new seals and rings in. when I put the new AM seals in I noticed it didn't want to turn over easily; I thought maybe the seals were tight cause they're AM so I didn't give it a second thought. put the piston and cylinder on last night and it turns hard right at TDC (harder than every where else but not really hard). both the slug and jug are adequately lubricated as is the lower end. now I don't know if its the seals or something else
when installed the seals the flywheel seal was much wider then OE (0.188 vs. 0.125). thinking I might have mashed it against bearing but can't say unless I take it out and try again. hate to waste a new seal.
what say yall?

Sure you're not feeling the magnet in the flywheel??

definitely sure. haven't installed anything on the case yet so when I place the flywheel on the shaft there's nothing for the magnets to grab

I would not think the seals would have that much friction.
Did you have the crank out of the case when you rebuilt it?
It would be possible if the seal was to wide and hitting on the bearing to cause it to bind some.
If push comes to shove and you do not see any other reason then pull the seal and measure it to see how bad the seal is rubbing on the bearing if at all.

If you pulls seals. Rotate it and see what happens then.

didn't have case split. seal looks to be square. if I pull it i'll have to replace it since I always destroy them when pulling. may just have to pull seals on my other 361 that needs seal replacement anyway.

pulled the suspect seal last night. no dice. still tight at TDC.
wondering now if my rings are too tight. didn't measure too tight before installation; actually, I was mad I took too much off.
also wondering if its the piston. it had couple of carbon scours on it that I cleaned up. didn't measure much smaller than jug. don't remember measurements; theyre on my work bench at home.
just gonna put it together and run it and see what happens. if nothing else i'll have some extra parts.

saw came from a recycling yard. compared new rings against old ones. the new ones are 0.065" (1.65mm) thick; the old ones are 0.060" (1.52mm). these are cut down SXL rings. are the new rings too thick? they fit in the piston with no wiggle. seems like I read somewhere they're sposed to be 1.5mm. wondering if my supplier didn't actually send me rings for a SXL; anyone know how thick SXL rings are?
