Bearing play
« on: November 30, 2015, 08:03:11 pm »
On the later model P/C saws like my 365, what signs would one need to look out for crank bearing replacement? There are signs of clutch contact with the cover on this one and there is quite a bit of side play, saw still runs strong though.

Shouldn't be any side play on the crank. If the rod moves side to side that's fine. The clutch end or flywheel side shouldn't move.

If the clutch is hitting the cover something isn't right. It is possible someone ran the saw without a bar and chain and the clutch started to spin off on deceleration and contacted the cover.

The poulan 330 3450 365 etc cranks and crank bearings are very loose fit. All have owned all had some side play back forth. I always thought it was weird but found it on all of them.

You just dont want UP DOWN play on the crank to crank bearings.  On these.

Dont ever recall a clutch making contact with covers I have had.

But have seen it done on saws like these. From what or why I havent a clue.  I think that cover you had for that 3.7 has some scars in it from past.  I never seen that saw show any signs of the clutch making contact.

What are you seeing, old marks?

With new oem  bearings the crank just slides right through and goes back forth too.  On these.

Kevin, the rub marks appear to old,so that's a relief and no up or movement.  If the  time ever comes to rebuild the bottom end, what tool is needed to remove the clutch and do you need a tool to remove the old seals?

Nothing really special on these.  $3 worm gear puller makes it easy. About a $9 clutch tool makes it easier but not needed.

Nothing for the bearings or seals needed, easy peasy. Easiest dang saws to work on IMO.

The part numbers for these are in a thread here.

OEM bearing about $4 and same as in a 372. Seals less then $3. Be wise to go to ordertree and pick up some seals extra. They went NLA once already and I paid double for some. They are back right now. ;)
