benchmark bm 46 (poulan 2800)
« on: February 19, 2013, 08:33:44 am »
been waiting for another 2800 to show up around here :)

nice anti-antivibe mod ;D

might need an airfilter:

the top end is toast. stupidity on the owners part of lending it out. leant to son who thought it had enough oil already ran through it to be safe running one tank of straight gas to get a small job done ::)
the guy ended up with a new husky 445 so he wasn't complaining. i have a whole other rebuilt 2800 that i was waiting for parts. this one will be a good taker offer for that one. these little saws are excelent in my book. one of my favorites.

these are what the 285, 305 and the 335 were derived from. same saw. this ones the 46cc version.
imma going to be tearing into it today to see how bad it is. i already know the piston is finished, hoping the cylinder is ok..
depending on the bottom end, it may be going back to the original orange color as i have a fully rebuilt one with a good topend (also new rings) sitting and waiting for parts. have a whole bunch of new anti-vibe mounts for it, so it will be getting them, full fuel system rebuild, new boot, and other various items i'll find it needs while into it.
just need to find an airfilter, thought i had a few but i guess i ran out. :'(

Who sold those Benchmark branded saws up there in Cunukistan?

You dont seem to see them very often and from what little info I have they only had 3 models for just a few years.

Also, who sold the Treemaster branded saws?

mark, it was home hardware that sold the 'benchmark' brand. they still use the name, just not on saws.
as to the 'treemaster' name, i have no idea who was selling that name but i have seen a few of them. i had a 4620 here last week with treemaster on it.

hey mark, you wouldn't have a line on a couple of the filters for these 2800's? or know a reliable source for them? either the flocked or screen, i don't care which.

Sorry, I have no line on those filters, except to watch on ebay or something like that. No freaking idea why they would let them go NLA like that. Might have been a supplier problem or something.

Personally, if I get to that point of really neeeding one, ,I think I would pull one apart and reline it with that MaxFlo filter material like I did on that 5200 and 2900 filter. They seem to be working fine that way.

I was thinking like Mark. I would buy a 12x12 sheet of the outerwears pre-filter screen and glue it to both side of your filter.

thanks mark! yeah i would just plastiweld some ultrafine stainless mesh on the outside (which i'm going to do on this old filter anyway), but it sure is nice to have a new filter under that cover. and have a couple people that have some foam under the screen, it does work good.
somebody on another forum pm'd me about a couple filters he's going to be aquiring in a parts lot. he said i have first dibs on them. hope it works out! 8)

i have an outerwears ring off my ford. used to have a 6"x14" k&n cleaner. needed the outerwear to keep the mud from getting in the filter. still have and have wanted to try it out on a filter for a saw. it's as fine as this stainless mesh i have here, probably a little easier to work with....

well, decided to try some of this stainless mesh on the benchmarks empty airfilter. wanted to see if i could just use a soldering iron and melt it into place instead of plasti-weld or epoxy.
did the back first as it was the easier one and if i screwed up, hey, it's the back side. who cares what it looks like :)

good filter for sharp chains and green hard wood:

turn the iron up:

i was at about this far when i noticed i needed to remove the left over flocking. for some reason, it doesn't 'melt' like the cages plastic. no biggie, pulled the mesh back and used a dremmel with a stone wheel to grind off the flocking:

after i made sure the mesh was down firmly, i went back over the 'seams' again further embedding it in the plastic.
cut the excess mesh off, ground the edges with the dremmel and call it done:

could've stretched the mesh tighter, but who cares? :D
it's on there. it won't come off:

yeah it's strong. it will take a beating. and filter very well.
now to get the other side done.
