Poulan Wild Thing 18in Bar

When I pull the rope all the way it gets stuck and wont go back in unless I remove starter cover.  Starter pawls move freely. If only pull rope out half way it will go back in. Just wanna double check before I changing the wrong parts that it all related to the recoil spring and needs replaced.

Yea, I wondering that too. I know if i spray heck out of it under the pulley with liquid wrench penetrating oil it will try to retract on its own.

I've taken them apart and there's dry crud mixed with dried grease inside the spring cavity.

I take them apart and the spring jumps all over creation. I clean it all up and lightly oil the spring with WD40.

Then I struggle to get the spring back in the cup. I start at the center and slide in more and more of the outside of the spring until you get all the spring in the cup.

It works like a charm when I get done. Then I'm proud as peach that I got that aggravating task done..

That spring can be a bear to get back in if you have never done one before.   I would try to clean it as best as you can without removing it unless you are confident you can get it back in.   I actually made a tool to do it because the spring fits down inside the cover making it difficult.

Back in my late teens and early adulthood I would do one every two or three years and it was hard for me but later on I was doing 4 or 5 a year and it became easy using no tools.

Butt if the spring is not broken and is functioning well it is best to not get involved wrestling with it for it will jump out of the cavity like a Jack in the box. Maybe even three or four times when you are trying to get it back in.

At one point in time, Poulan had fan housings that were incorrectly molded. The back side of the pulley would drag on a narrow ridge on the housing. I see about one of these a month. We usually just replace the housing, but you can cut the ridge down with a dremel. We see several that the pulley and housing actually melt and weld together.
