Looks like a 295 or 4620 poulan. Also look under those in poulan board.

So this is a plan:
1. fuel filter, fuel lines, spark plug, up fuel pick (what is it? no diagrams) - clean or replace (reason: didn't smell flooding)
2. replace rope if it's shorter than required
3. air filter - clean or replace
4. clean or replace: carb, ignition module, spark arrestor, anything else?

I need this 18" to work, so suggestions welcome!

Take the starter cover off,  remove the top cover also.
When you get the starter cover off then look at the flywheel and make sure nothing is stuck to the magnet or jammed in the fins.   

With the starter cover off pull the rope and see how far it comes out and then come and let us know what you found.

Should take 30 to 36 inches of rope. Give or take.  Local store here about .25 a foot.

That definitely looks like a 295/4620 variant to me.  Notice how the EPA sticker has a Poulan part # (530 055221) on the right edge.  Most Poulan part numbers have a 5300 prefix.

Interesting how some of the Sears MN prefixes are starting to change.  The Husqvarna Group (or whatever they're called now) has owned both Poulan and AYP for a while now (and Electrolux owned them both before that).  Despite that, AYP and Poulan manufactured Sears products have continued to keep the 'pre Electrolux/HVA Group' prefixes.   For decades, Poulan has been 358 and AYP has been 917.

This 944 Sears prefix is new to me.   Maybe all the Husqvarna Group stuff is getting that 944 prefix now.  I've seen one or two of the Sears branded chinese made 'mcculloch' (no caps, as it's a mac in name only) saws with 358 model # prefixes.  Now that's really weird to me, as those share nothing with anything built by Poulan.  The McCulloch name is part of the Husqvarna Group as well however.  McCulloch had a 989 prefix for a while.  Saw that on McCulloch products sold by Sears in the 1980's and early 1990's.  The machines were still branded McCulloch (instead of Sears/Craftsman) but had small Sears MN/SN decals (with the 989 prefix) on them as well.

I just checked a more up to date Sears/Craftsman MN prefix list.  Husqvarna is listed as 944, which looks to now include other brands within the Husqvarna group, jugging by this latest saw.
