Poulan 4218
« on: November 30, 2015, 03:26:15 pm »
I have a Poulan 4218.  Recently it began shutting down when I pull the trigger to speed up the engine.
I have re-cleaned the air filter, replaced the gas filter and generally did all the cleaning chores I normally do.  I had already done these but did it again.

The engine will run fine until the throttle plate on the carburator opens up.  At that point it just dies.  Gas flow seems to OK and the gas lines appear to be clear.

Any Ideas?

The fuel mixture is too lean. You need to open the mixture needles some or maybe rebuild the carburetor.

That should be a strato engine with the separate air valve throttle above the carb.  Make sure the linkage is working and that air valve is opening.

Just to be sure blow through fuel line attached to filter. Sometimes poulan filters rust up inside nipple end. Might be passing to little fuel.

Thanks for all the replies.  I have done all the suggested "repairs" except rebuilding the carb to no avail.  I'll try that this week. and let you all know how it fairs.

Make sure to pay close attention to the order of the gasket and diaphragm when you take the carb apart.   Also take a real close look at where the lever height is before you take it apart and make sure the new one is set the same.   Be care full of that little spring because the kit does not come with a replacement.   Let us know how it turns out.

Just has a poulan 4218 dropped off. Guy was cutting bigger limb and it stopped on him.
He was thinking since it might have had older fuel in it, he dumped and put fresher in. ?
Still nothing.

Thing looks like new, even bar paint etc.

Will update when I go through it.

Primer bulb stays stuck in. Carb not drawing in fuel.

Wondering if old fuel left in it fubarred something in carb or? Said it was a 3 year old saw and first time used this year with old gas that has been setting in it. How old the mix was guessing at least last years.

Ran everything across to owner. Worse case was having to buy a new carb.

Showed him the difference in his poulan and the craftsman 3.0 49cc bare bore, like a poulan 3000 in chrome bore I had for sale. He traded in the 4218 to upgrade to the like new 49cc craftsman today. Set it up with 16" 325.

So the 4218 will go on the back burner shelf for time being.
