Got the carb rebuilt on the "new" 4218. Reassembled. Tried to start it amidst high expectations. No joy. Got spark. Plug smells of fuel. I've no pressure gauge so I can't check but it seems to have low compression when I'm trying to start. What am I missing?

Have you checked the piston? compression?  you even stated it feels low above.

Mighty hard to tell difference between 90 lbs. compression and 110 lbs. with just your elbow for a gauge.  110 will run 90 won't at least on sorta modern saws.  ;D

make sure you get one with what looks like a tire valve in the end of the hose. (schrader valve)

You need to check the compression at this time.   There are only 3 things needed.   Spark, fuel, and compression.   Also make sure the muffler has no restrictions.
Try priming it with some mix through the carburetor.   Hold the throttle wide open and drip some fuel into the carb.   Then pull it over about 5 times and see if the plug is wet or dry from fuel.

Poulan 4218 seems like very low hour saw.

Once that secondary air inlet above carb opens up it kills it.   Tried adjust it out and was way better but L side way to open now.  Put back so it idles and then it wont take the throttle when the blasted strato air inlet opens.

Ideas?

Checked carb kit. Both diaphragms were fine IMO. Fulcrum was way off low. I adjusted it to right height.

Put all together and can get it to go to full throttle but not by quick triggering it. Will fall flat and die. No about of adjustments fix it.    Will idle all day and can feather it to get to full throttle.

Did catch one thing. With H I could screw it all the way in and idle would change and then screw it out and it would mess with idle again.  I think there is something wrong in the carb where the H circuit is leaking by.  aka bad carb.

Anyone seen this?

Think I will just order a $20 carb new.
